Angry High ping, high ping, and more high ping (TF2)

Hello,

Recently, I've been getting very high ping in TF2. (upwards of 100. Can go as high as 300). I have absolutely no idea why. This applies to EVERY server I join. Back in the good days, I use to have ping as low as 5 (this is on the server I usually play on- Lotus Clan 24/7 Dustbowl). I've tried just about everything. Defragmenting, verifying cache, restarting router, updating drivers, etc. If anyone were to help me with this problem, I would greatly appreciate it. It's up to the point where I'm almost unable to play. Thanks in advance.

Specs (computer is lenovo x1)

2.5GHz Intel Core i5-2520M
4GB (1x4GB) RAM
320GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
Intel GMA HD 3000 Graphics

Your ping is linked to your connection and distance in relation to the server.

So its most likely a connection related problem.

Check running programs of your computer and any other computer using your internet. You'd be surprised how much a brother's bittorrent client can mess with your games :P

Thanks for the answers! Darklight, I did the test. My grade was a "c" (which I presume is pretty bad), my ping 72 ms and jitter 38 ms. My packet loss was 1%.

Yahoo, I had 5 ping or lower when I went to the server just last week, so I'm not too sure if it's with the server.

shado, that might just be the problem. My brother has been torrenting some big files as of late.

Dark, done. Should I list the details here or in a pm?

From that you can see that it is inconsistent and all from the 1st hop, this means that it is likely internal (someone else using the net).

I also think that's the problem, I'll talk to my brother. How would I go about disconnecting him?

Depends how you are connect and how he is connected. If he is using wireless you could just change the password or if just him is on wireless you could just turn wireless off. If he is on ethernet you could either subnet him out or change the subnet and turn off DHCP.
