As long as it is for the PC. All you have to do is DL the update. The CD for PC version is the same as the Steam version.

Depends.... is this CD a legitimate copy of the game which you must still register on Steam and run through the Steam client? Sounds ... like not.

If its a pirate copy then no, you can't, since you can't run it through Steam and the only options on the main menu you'll get are "NO STEAM" and "QUIT"

If its a legit copy then yes, since the CD copy is the same as the Steam copy (well, no.. its not. But you can just update the game for free)

Obviously since you cannot make changes to the CD, it has to run from the HD. The game needs to be installed, Steam enabled, and fully patched, before you can do ANYTHING with the modding tools.

I think nate1299 needs to clarify what he means by "CD" as it's such a vague and inaccurate question.

I'm sure the answer is shuffled among the replies, though.

Can you tell the general sense of "it's not legit"?

Everyone here are bullies!
Doesn't need to be a "CD" to be a pirate copy!
Most pirate games don't even make it to a disk. They install right from the HDD.

Yes you can make maps using the tools if you have a "CD" copy of Portal 2.
When you install the game you will be asked for the code that is inside the box, this will connect your CD copy of Portal 2 to Steam.
After that you will be asked to download the update. It will be pretty big as i dont think Valve ever did a retail CD copy of the game with the updates attached.

You will have to make a Steam acount if you dont already have 1 and be logged into Steam to play the game.

If you are a pirate and are silly enough to ask fully paying people how to play the game with the map maker. The answer is... YOU CANT!

Actually, it doesn't need to run from the hard drive once its installed... I know for a fact, since I bought the retail version of Portal 1 and lost the disk 2 days after installing it.

Um... Then you agree it doesn't need to run from the disk and does run from the hard drive.

Nobody here is a bully. The first post was vague so people offered as many possible solutions as possible.

How are we suppose to know what "CD" copy means? Especially considering Portal 2 is stored on your computer and needs to be activated with Steam, as well as have the DLC and updates downloaded via Steam as well.

So saying "CD" makes little sense. There ARE indeed pirated versions that involve running the game solely off a CD or ISO without having it activated on Steam.

Yeah um... ALL steam games run from the drive, not the cds. That's the ENTIRE POINT of Steam. To not HAVE to run from the disk. Y'know. Copy protection? Authentication? All done through Steam - online, on the hard drive.

They're not asking "can I install it from a cd", they're asking if they can use the interactive map making just with that and the answer is a resounding "no".

Lol, I just realized I said "hard drive" in response to "hard drive" when I meant disk drive and thought Zek said disk drive fail

I'm just waiting for the OP to come by and clarify. Seriously, ... every moment that goes by in here is another moment I think they're a pirate. I know it's bad of me to assume the worst, but... really?

Well, with the whole Steam Store thing, it is safe to assume that about 30% of the CDs are pirated and that 90.6% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
