Crashes 8/23/12
Some players may currently be experiencing crashes.
The issue is a steam update included a new system for uploading avatar images, but there was a bug that caused thousands of images to be incorrectly sized. The incorrectly sized images are causing a memory corruption issue that causes the game to crash To resolve this: The game team is working on an update to protect against the crash, while the steam team is working to find and resize all of the broken avatars. To help with identification, broken avatars will appear as white squares. Even after the resize is finished, some users will need to flush their local cache to see the correct images. To flush your cache, you will need to delete the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\appcache\httpcache Due to the odd nature of the crash, it wasn't being reported to our crash database. Thanks to people posting in the forums we were able to narrow down the issue and work on a solution. |

Deleting the cache (While offline) did nothing to solve avatar problems.

Ahh, fantastic. Thanks for the update! I really hope this solves -all- the issues.. I almost don't want to play anymore out of fear of getting disappointed, lol.

How odd that it is avatar related when non of the avatar related fixes fixed the problem for me and others.
Deleting now, lets see if it works. |

I love how they are so quick to 'fix' a problem that they caused themselves that effects the ability for people to play their half hearted game but when it comes to anything else that's been mentioned for years and years.
Its conveniently ignored. Maybe its just a sign of their incompetence these days. Throw out an update, its a disaster that causes crashes. Issue another update sometime later that fixes that issue then that's it. No wonder why they never update the game which is why I've said they need to give the game away to the community and focus on TF2, CSGO, DOTA2 and the like. For a while I'd place the blame squarely on Microsoft keeping them from updating the game due to sizes of the update but its clear as day that's not the sole reason. |

I actually managed to get through a game, bizzare. Doesnt mean it is fixed but here is hopeful.
Why did canadarox's fix NOT work but this one did for me if this is actually the issue...? |

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think deleting the cache isn't the FIX for this, but rather, something you are supposed to do once Valve issues a steam update and re-sizes the images. Has that update already gone out? If not, deleting your cache, as a lot of you have already done, will not do anything until Valve issues said update and re-sizes the images.
That is how I interpreted it anyway. Is that correct Chet? |
