Steam Operating System

It would be great to have a steam operating system designed for nothing more than running steam, its games and basic internet surfing. Basically a tiny operating system that isn't bloated with built in software, features and other unrelated things to gaming, nibbling on your machine's performance.

It's just a thought after watching Steam's new 'Big Picture' video.

Hypothetically, would anyone else use this operating system if you could boot it easily on demand, maybe even from a USB storage device to run games off your hard drive(s)?

I'd prefer Windows... unless you're up for writing new drivers and software for this OS :/

Do you know what an operating system is. It isn't just a user interface and start menu. It's never going to happen.

No. I do more than game and routinely need access to higher-end productivity, development, and creative software packages (the latter two often eat just as much if not more resources than gaming which rules out VMs). When I game I don't usually have the desire to either close those applications fully or reboot into another OS.

I have no problem if others use it, but I would have absolutely zero intention of doing so. I use gaming as general reprieve form other computing activities that I have a strong interest in. In fact, I feel that a gaming only OS on a PC will stifle gaming communities as a whole leading to a lack of creativity and/or community building due to it being massively inconvenient to do anything other than gaming or social networking.

Nope, can't say I'd use it.

As it turns out, many of the services an operating system provides are important to gaming. If you build a custom OS from scratch, you'll be going so far backwards and reinvent the wheel so much that it simply wouldn't be worth it. It would cost a silly amount of money just to recreate something that can provide equal performance to what we already have.

Valve could start releasing steam for linux, and they could even release a modern kernel distribution if they want, but they dont really need to. You're looking for a minimal ubuntu install or some other minimal linux. gl
