Games similar to Borderlands

So, I really haven't played any FPS games for around 15-20 years from back in the Quake, UT, Duke Nukem days when I played just about every one that came out.

I tried Borderlands for the first time a couple months ago when Steam had a freeplay weekend. I was addicted immediately. Bought the GOTY and been playing it ever since. Only took a break last weekend when Saints Row the Third was freeplay but that didn't hook me quite like BL had. Was fun and I may buy it when it goes on sale again but I've gone back to BL. Will get BL2 when I'm done with PT's for all 4 characters.

Anyways, since I'm rediscovering this genre again and came late into the BL phenomena for online play, what other similar type games have I been missing out on since I haven't paid any attention to these type of games for years?
I'm good with single player games, sniping with Mordercai was real fun..still want to try some of his other mods...still need to face Craw and read up on strategies...still need to play Lilith and learn the art of phasewalking...and so on.
Online play is not that important since I figure any recommended games would be older with smaller, more hardcore communities I'm guessing.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Torchlight 2

It's not a FPS but the audience seems to cross over quite alot because of the class based looting action.

You may also like RAGE, it's kinda like borderlands but smaller and more linear without any RPG elements.

If you want a FPS with RPG bits you should check out Fallout 3/New vegas (and maybe even oblivion/Skyrim although they have no guns, only swords bows and magic).

Hope that helps!

Diablo 2

Still active, and it was the main inspiration behind a lot of the mechanics of Borderlands.

Try Mass Effect and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

I don't think there are many games similar to Borderlands, I mean not many FPS with some rpg elements maybe the closer thing could be Rage, but is a FPS without RPG elements and much shorter, going to RPGs with FPS or 3rd person view combat system, you may have Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas, Deus Ex ( the original, a bit old but still great game), Deus Ex Human Revolution, the Mass Effect trilogy, etc.
But if you are looking for good FPS there are a huge offer, but some games what certain people may love others despise it, so it may depends on what type of game and what you look for in them, realism, fast paced combat, humor, a good story, etc.

if u like storyline and RPG set in the future/s-f u should look at Fallout series.. BUT Fallout 3 is average .. In my opinion Fallout 2 is the best cRPG ever made, and i think future games will not change it

EYE Divine Cybermancy. It's first person cooperative multiplayer with persistent leveling and stat building. And it's bat$hit insane. A great game for people with twisted minds. If Deus Ex had a baby with Doom and that baby had a baby with Borderlands, and then that baby was raised by Hunter S Thompson, you'd have EYE. The game is as confusing as this post but I highly recommend it.

Dead Island is as close to Borderlands without being Borderlands, I'd suggest downloading the Torchlight and Torchlight 2 demos.

Skyrim, Dead Island (although I got POed that they nerfed the kick, you were able to kick forever without stam drain, now you use stam when you kick.. killed the game for me), Saints Row 3, course there isn't lvling in SR3, but neways. Oh Just Cause 2 has a Chaos meter :P

If you REALLY liked Borderlands, you wont like any of the games listed above.
They may be good games (I have most of them), but none of them are Borderlands.
And none provide the thrill of Borderlands, like Borderlands itself does, nor the thrill of looting.
Almost all of them are way slower paced also, except Rage.

But, good news, Borderlands 2 IS like Borderlands.

I cannot believe no one has said this yet:

Hellgate: London

And of course, Fallout and Stalker are similar, and RAGE (minus the RPG/LOOTness).
