I bet you are in the Steam client beta(the one with The Big Picture.) If this is the case do this:
-Click on View, then click on Settings. -Under the Account tab, look at the Beta participation section. You will want to OPT OUT of the beta participation. -Click OK, and it should ask you to restart steam. -If done correctly, you will see Steam restart and start updating Now try to play the game. Please confirm if this worked. |

I'm having the same exact issue, but with Portal 2.
I'm in the Big Picture beta. I tried to opt out, but even thought steam displays my account as NOT in the beta (in the Account Settings windows), I can still access the Big Picture via that circular button on the upper right corner of the main screen. This issue happened today after I verified integrity of game cache. I don't know how to solve this...

Steam just got updated. After restarting it, the Big Picture button disappeared from my main screen (as I was expecting, as I had opted out) and Portal 2 could be opened again.
Weird. Now I'm afraid to verify game cache and to return to Big Picture. |

and im pretty sure the game cache had nothing to do with it, just a coincidence with the beta

I had the same issue for two days, you need to opt out of the beta, steam will restart.
Close steam again and open it, it will then update back to old version and it will work. |

yh and if you still can't get the beta to remove itself then manually go to the steam menu and select check for steam client updates while opted out
