Lightbulb Dark Souls Guide: Best Controller to Use and How to Set Them Up!

I've been seeing a lot of posts lately asking what controller (if any) should be used for Dark Souls and also how to make the controller work for the game. So I decided to make a topic about it!

Firstly, what's a good controller to use fo the game? Check out: Dark Souls: Best Game Controller

Personally though, I have experience using the following controllers for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition -- Xbox 360 Controller, PS3 Controller, Logitech Rumblepad 2. So one wireless, two wired USB ones.

Confirmed Working Controllers
If anyone feels like contributing, please list what controller you used successfully with this game and what driver you used (if using a special one at all)
  • Xbox 360 Controller - many are reporting it working right out of the box -- no special drivers needed (wired and wireless)
  • Xbox Controller with x360ce - Works well
  • PS3 Controller with MotionJoy - Works equally well
  • Logitech Rumblepad 2 - Works! Used x360ce with it
  • AfterGlow Wired Xbox 360 controller - No special drivers needed
  • PowerA Mini Pro EX Controller for Xbox 360 - No Special Driver Needed
  • PlayStation 2 (PS2) Controller - MotionJoy or x360ce
  • Razer Hydra - x360ce - set the trigger axes to HAxis3 and IHAxis3, respectively. Also, turn up the trigger deadzones because the slightest little touch can set them off. I set them at 50% (thanks Kellas)

(Note: Keyboard and mouse is acceptable for this game, though many feel uncomfortable with it)

Configuring Controllers to Work With Dark Souls for PC
This is the next step. Sometimes you can simply plug a controller into the USB port and it will work right away. Other times, that is not the case and you may need custom drivers. It should be noted though that TOO MANY drivers is never a good thing as they can conflict with each other, but anyway...

The two most widely accepted custom drivers to use are x360ce and MotioninJoy. They work for all controllers -- Xbox 360 controllers, PlayStation 3 controllers, etc. Let's go over setting the controllers up with these!

x360ce for Dark Souls
  1. Download x360ce
  2. Install
  3. Copy c360ce.exe into your Dark Souls data folder (where your Dark Souls exe is)
  4. Open c360ce.exe
  5. Copy xinput1_1.dll, xinput1_2.dll, xinput1_3.dll to the Data directory

MotioninJoy for Dark Souls
  1. Download MotioninJoy
  2. Install
  3. Open it and go to the drivers tab
  4. Select controller + install driver
  5. Under profiles, select Xbox 360 Controller Emulator

Dark Souls PC Controller Not Working
If you game controllers aren't working after this, then it could be a couple of reasons.

I recommend checking out the following guide: Dark Souls: Fix Xbox 360,PS3, & Other Controllers

You can also post in here of course too and (hopefully) the community will assist.

I didn't need anything but the original driver to make my xbox controller work for Dark Souls or any controller supported game for that matter, so x360ce may not be needed, only if your controller isn't official or something like that

Seems like the 360 controllers have the least problems, but some people have had issues with it still.

I'm using a Wireless Xbox 360 controller + MS wireless receiver and didn't have to do anything extra to get it working with Dark Souls (Win 7 64).

I'm using a PS2 controller with Motioninjoy. Works fine but R2/L2 need extra pressure to activate, which isn't necessarily a bad thing since what they're used for. I plugged the controller to the pc with one of those 5€ adapters.
In Motioninjoy i set it as Xinput. Don't remember if i had to change the button layout, but if i had it was a one timer.
I plug the pad and launch Motioninjoy BEFORE launching the game, and when i launch it i don't touch the keyboard, mouse or gamepad or else it crashes. When the loading thingy on the lower left corner appears i'm good to go.

The Razer Hydra works fine with x360ce. Just make sure to set the trigger axes to HAxis3 and IHAxis3, respectively. Also, turn up the trigger deadzones because the slightest little touch can set them off. I set them at 50%.

They added PS2 controller support?

I've been using the x360ce with my PS2 controller since Dark Souls released and haven't had a problem.

I don't know, when i plug it in motioninjoy detects it as a Sixasis. Still, it works.

Friend of mine used MotioninJoy for a generic USB controller (all it says on it is "USB" lol).

No idea on the model. Just FYI for people using similarly generic controllers.

Question

When using the PS3 with MotionInJoy, whenever I just barely pull off a block, the game will freeze for a moment, and then I will hear the little jingle that tells me that something has been disconnected from the computer, and right after that the jingle that tells me that something was connected. The problem is that MotionInJoy stops emulating the 360 controller when this happens, leaving me motionless and defenseless should the enemy decide to move away from my front. How can I fix this? Should I start a completely separate thread? Should I ask somewhere on the MiJ forums?
