Has anyone ever buffed their "unarmed" skill?

Is there really any benefit to it, especially considering melee?

I do. Although I have a intelligence of 10 so I level every skill

Fallout 3 / New Vegas are pretty easy, so there's no reason why you can't level it before Melee / Guns if you enjoy some of the unarmed weapons (ie Two-Step Goodbye)

There are a lot of unarmed special moves you can get from various characters, many of which prove quite useful in mob-type situations. It's all about play-styles. In fact, my next play-through I've been thinking about going the pure unarmed/stealth route...

And then I punch it with this.

Unarmed is perfectly viable and so much fun.

Imagine the two-step goodbye in the hands of someone with 10 luck and all the plus-critical perks...

Yes, you have to get close, and damage can be a factor in unarmed, but there are so many perks that can buff it and there are all of the little unarmed combat maneuvers that people can teach you that give you many combat options. Ranger takedown, Scribe Counter, the Great Khan dirt-in-the-eye trick... plenty of fun to be had in unarmed.

did it once in fallout 3.

100 sneak + stealthsuit + deathclaw = lots of one hit dead stuff!

High unarmed in New Vegas gets you Piercing Strike, and with Piercing Strike your foes might as well not be wearing armor when you hit them with a Super Sledge. Totally worth it.

Unarmed is amazing in New Vegas, I won't lie. You haven't truly felt like a god until you clear out Dead Wind Cavern, one hit killing almost every Deathclaw in the place with an uppercut.

I did a melee playthrough with a fully upgraded katana and the perks for Piercing Strike and the knockback one (can't remember the name offhand) - I took out entire NCR patrols singlehandedly. I ought to try that against the Legion next time...

Not trying to turn this into a 3-vs-NV thread, but it seems that melee/unarmed are much more viable in NV, not only because of the perks but also because it seems to me that the enemy AI will sense when you're going into combat without guns and the enemy will by and large switch to match you. Nothing sucked in FO3 more than trying to go Shishkebab on a bunch of raiders and having them ventilate your armor with SMGs.
