Let's have a reasonable discussion on Pinion

If you are going to respond to this thread, please do so in a civil manner! Too often these threads devolve into a sea of ad hominem and circle-jerking. Only post if you're going to discuss peoples posts and reasons, or contribute your own. Thank you!

Ahem....

So, Pinion. The controversial advertising corp that has earned SPUF's undying hate, and the subject of many debates. Their ads can be used in 2 ways: for making loadsamone and for paying server costs. The former is inexcusable capitalist filth; the latter a fine example of civilized socialism, second only to clicking sites for charity

Of course, there's a reason why the rich and hatted sentenced Marx to death by bureaucracy: Socialized systems stink. Being forced to view an ad before a game detracts from its quality. Granted, 20 seconds isn't a huge amount of time to wait, but it's for the most part unnecessary. The common justification (besides the tired "you're an entitled brat" retort) for this is that server bills have to be paid somehow. While it does have some ground, there are some good arguments to be made against this point.

For example, if someone can't afford the price of hosting a server, why are they hosting one? TF2 has thousands of servers that run just fine without Pinion. If your serve doesn't bring anything unique to the table, why bother host a below-average one? Likewise, if your server is a quality one, shouldn't donors be able to cover it? It ultimately comes down to quality vs. quanitity (unless you like staring at an ad for half a minute, Pinion does harm your experience), but given the abundance of servers that function just fine without it, why bother getting more?

Of course, not all servers can survive off donations. Plenty of them are paid for by the server owner themselves. In this case, the reasoning is more along the lines of "why should I have to pay for the experience of others?" Note that this does not make the server owner a greedy . After all, most players contribute jack-squat towards maintaining the sever, so having them pay for their visit by viewing an ad is actually pretty reasonable. This doesn't mean it doesn't detract from the servers quality, though, giving legitimate reasons for their complaints. Why put up with Pinion when Railbait does the same thing without the wait?

To end this long rant, I'll use an analogy: Pinion is basically the IPhone of the server market. It provides an inferior service that serves to benefit the owner (who, again, isn't a greedy , just a bit selfish) while harming the consumer (in a very minor way, but still notable). Thank you and good night!

My main objection is that if you're browsing random servers, there's no way to tell which severs are pinion equipped or not. Which then means they might have a good chance of crashing steam, forcing me to re-validate and defragment TF2 in order to play again in half an hour. Valve should just make it easy to avoid them, if you don't like em, by an easier method than blacklisting them one by one.

I feel like the reason there are so many servers is partly because of the influx from MvM, but mostly from the Uber update. The playerbase just isn't very stable and rapidly changes meaning that servers will get a ton of buisiness for a few days but then go dry for a few weeks. To cover the cost of those weeks the ads are put in, but they end up hurting the server's playerbase, leading to less players and the need for more, longer, and forced ads, until the server finally dies. But, because of the random influxes, the servers don't die, and it leads to the huge amount of these servers we have today.

What's worse is when a normal server (not trade/randomizer) charges cash for actual advantages, i.e becoming a sentry-buster or the like.

I know of several servers off the top of my head, run by people without well paying jobs, that don't use pinion and only POLITELY ask for donations. If you're so ignorant you're forced to use draconian things like Pinion, you shouldn't be running a server.

Pinion didn't exit in 2009 and 2010 and people ran servers fine back then. It's not needed and only servers to draw players away from your server.

It's just a very badly done advertising scheme, which the community disapproves of.

That and if it forces you to watch the server MOTD, then it violates your rights under the current the ToS. Of course, you can't do anything about it, so every blacklist counts.

Hopefully pinion will get the message one of these days, and server owners will stop taking the cheap way out, and boycott it.

For the love of god, extend setup time by the amount of time I'm forced to watch a Lysol Fresh Wipes commercial so red engies don't get screwed.

This. I am really sick of this when I'm trying to find a server when my favorites are full/empty.

Also, ads poping up DURING GAMEPLAY are completely inexcusable, I really don't care what excuses you have.

I seen a similar thread about this not too long ago, where a user explained how to block pinion to some extent. It's worked for me and I no longer have to wait and watch those annoying ads before joining. You will still get blank motd's by doing this but no more pinion and waiting, and you can cancel it straight away and gain instant access to join a team or whatever.

How to do it:
First go to: C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam\steamapps\[YOUR USERNAME]\team fortress 2\tf\cfg

Create a file called autoexec.cfg in notepad (if already there, open it with notepad if it asks you). Remember to save it using Save As and choosing all files from the save as file type drop down (instead of Text File).

Add the following line to autoexec.cfg
alias closed_htmlpage "echo Blocked pinion!"

Save the file and close it.

Now go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and locate the file called hosts, open this with notepad as well.

underneath where it says:
# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

add the following:

127.0.0.1 motd.pinion.gg

Save it and your done. No more pinion.

If the hosts file does not save Right click on he hosts file and choose properties and then uncheck the read only checkbox.

You still get motd's and the "please wait 30 seconds for pot of gold blah blah blah...." but the motd's now say connection problem because they cant connect to pinion and you can cancel them straight away.

These useless servers are a complete waste. It's sad that there's one of these servers populated while there's a good server empty. Don't ever play on them, and maybe they will go away.

I'm alright with ads, in general. As long as

A. They don't force me to watch them for 30 seconds. (Or any amount of time, really. Image ads are fine. Video ads that I have to hit a play button for are OK as long as they don't make people crash, that way it's optional.)
B. They don't interrupt me in the middle of the game (and everyone else on the server. Since adding the "pinion blocking" thing, I've legitimately seen times in matches where everyone but me is just frozen for 30 seconds. Literally. Everybody in a 24 player server except me. I go on a killing spree).
C. They don't pop up 4 times in a match.
