restore L4D2 without complete redownload

last night my buddy and I were playing 3rd party campaigns. We played Warcelona which was awesome (had one giant red error) and then tried Yama.

The server we ended up on made loads of the commons glow which they hadn't done when I'd played for about 5 mins single player so I'm guessing it was a server side mod.

We only got about half way then stopped because we ended up stuck in the cable car so this morning I decided to have a go myself. Whenever I try and run it single player it loads but then quits a moment later with a "server is enforcing consistency for this file" error. Also the commons are still glowing.

I deleted the vpk files and reinstalled them from the original download and verified local game cache (there's always one file needs to be redownloaded) but that hasn't helped.

Is there a way to remove all customisations etc and return to vanilla L4D2 without having to redownload everything? - it's 13.2GB!

I don't have a workshop folder but renaming the addons and reverifying seems to have fixed the problems. Many thanks.

Is there a way to stop a rogue server doing that again?

It is common for certain mods to migrate from the servers to your computer. They will show up in other multi-player matches and even in single-player. Usually a steam restart fixes it for me.
This is one of many reasons I hate server side mods. I wish server administrators would just run vanilla versions of the maps/campaigns and let us players customize the game with client side mods (if we want it customized at all).
Right now when selecting Best Available Servers, I have to join to see if I am weightless, with unlimited ammo, and a Tank in shorts shooting lightening.

I've never seen a tank hold a flashlight, so I don't think it's possible for one to shoot "lightening". The boomer sure needs lightening, but would need a jumprope.

Tank with "lightening"

Since when does lightening come from a flashlight??
And yes, there is a server side mod that makes the tank throw off some type of lightening. It sucks like 99% of the other server side mods.

Lightening comes from the sun, mostly, but a flashlight will work.

Looks like you need to read this.

OMG, lightening comes from the sun??
And all along I thought it was a bright flash of electricity produced by a thunderstorm.

And all this time, you were wrong.

@op, there might be a file or folder you can mark read-only in order to prevent servers from modifying them. I wouldn't know which files to do that to, though.

A simpler fix for when playing on a modded server that causes your single player games to continue having the modded effects is to merely go play briefly on a unmodded server. All the crap will be gone like magic when you start another game after that.

He's making fun of your spelling, lightening and lightning are two different words.

Was this as i remember, not sure. Ingame, go to: options/multiplayer/custom server content, select none.
