If i activate a game on steam that i already have, will it become giftable or wasted?

I bought a few games on amazon in a bundle since it was actually cheaper to buy 3 games than just the one i wanted for some reason, anyway it turns out it gave me steam keys for the games rather than just using the amazon downloader.

So now i have an extra steam key for a game i bought a copy of on steam before.

Now... since i did actually pay money for this, i'd like to see about trading it for for a different game, i know that games can be traded on steam, but i've never used this feature.

How do i go about doing so? I have a code i can redeem for the game, should i redeem it? Would doing so give me a giftable version of the game since i already have the game on my account? Or would it just waste the code and do nothing?

How can i go about trading this?

Steam won't let you activate more than one copy of a game.

No, you can not add a key for a game to your inventory.

Trading outside of the established system is done at your own risk. If you get cheated, support will not be able to do anything to help.

If it doesn't all fit in the trade window, don't trade.

There are certain cases where a game you own can be activated with a key, but it gets wasted and you won't get a bonus copy.

Is there an established system to trade keys through steam?

There is, and it is quite literally: don't trade keys.

If you get scammed, you will not be reimbursed for it.

It says i don't have permission to access that page.

At any rate, i can't do much with an extra key to a game i already have, so it seems like the best option is to just see if anyone i actually know is wanting to trade (or maybe i'd just give it away...) and consider the possibility of being scammed an acceptable risk.

Straight copy/paste. It's in the trade forum so you'd need to add your Steam profile to the forum account.

Steam Trading Policy

Steam will not return any items that you feel have been traded unfairly - no exceptions.

If your account were hijacked, and if your items were lost, Steam Support will investigate your account and determine whether to return your lost items or not. Steam Support will only restore items once in an event of an account hijacking.

Steam will not return items that were scammed. Steam asks you to confirm a trade before a deal is made final. It is your responsibility to review the items that you are trading for before accepting any deal.

If you are scammed, please contact Steam Support and create a ticket within the Steam Trading Category. Your lost items will not be returned, but reporting the scammer will allow Steam Support to take appropriate action.

Do not conduct trades outside of the Steam Trade Window. This means do not trade items for cash, gift cards, CD-keys, etc. Stay inside of the Steam Trade Window.

Some tips to ensure safe trading:
  1. Do not rush a trade.
  2. Mouse over every item to ensure that the item/gift's properties are correct.
  3. Pay attention to the trade log while making the trade.
  4. Do not trade items outside the trade window.
  5. Ensure that you are trading with the correct user.

Detailed information on the Steam Trading Policy can be found on the Steam Support website:

So, aside from being potentially risky, it's not illegal or anything, right?

Illegal? No.
Against forum rules? Yes.
Will Valve actively stop you? Not really outside the forum.

So it's just not allowed to be done on steam forums then?
