Thumbs up Custom "Noisemakers" in TF2 8/27 Update

This isn't exactly NEW news, but Valve did fix a bug I emailed about them today that fixes sound jingles downloading to the wrong folder. Now they work as intended, and everyone can use them, for free.

So what are these custom sound jingles? Basically, they work just like sprays. Instead of VTF files, you are uploading WAV files to the server, which is then downloaded to the clients on the server just like sprays. It's a spray in sound form, you can have any sound you like, as long as it fits the file size limit of 128kb. These custom sounds also have the same cooldown time of sprays, to prevent spam.

How do you get one, though?

First, enable the developer console, in Options > Keyboard > Advanced, then use the tilde key to access it. Type in the cvar cl_customsounds "1" and press enter to enable the jingles. Now, you can hear other people's sounds.

If you want your own sound, make a WAV file of your sound and name it jingle.wav, then make a new folder in your tf/custom directory. You can name this folder whatever you want, and you can make a VPK file of it later if you desire. In that folder, make another new folder called "sound", and inside THAT folder, make a new one called "player". In the "player" folder, that is where you will place your jingle.wav.

Your sound has to be mono, has to have a 44100Hz sample rate, and has to be under 512kb for this to work.

Now that you have your custom sound all set up, you need to go back into TF2 and enter the console again. First, set your sound location with this cvar: cl_soundfile "sound/player/jingle.wav"

You must also bind a key to the command "impulse 202" so you can play the sound. For example, you can enter this command in the console to bind the sound file to the H key: bind "h" "impulse 202" Join a server, and now you can play your sound jingle by pressing the key!

Your custom sounds can also have lip sync, if you use the faceposer in the Source SDK. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQpPjk0hQ-E

TIP: put these commands and your binds in autoexec.cfg so you always have you sounds enabled whenever you start TF2.

TIP: set your server to sv_pure 2 to block the sounds.

This isn't enabled by default. So tell your friends, and your friend's friends, and eventually sound sprays will become more popular as more people enable it. This has been done before, but it's mostly unknown to the majority, and now that the bug is fixed and they are working, I wanted to share it with you all.

Pretty sure I'll be turning this off soon enough, honestly.

any good recommendations for a wav converter that can keep it's file size down?

I have a 2 second clip, and the instant I convert it to wav it goes from 25 kb to 256 kb lol.

I'm well aware of that, but if a 2 second sound clip cannot go under 128 kb, I don't know how anyone can utilize this...

The Valve Developer Wiki states that impulse 202 has a limit of 128kb, however, the TF2 sprays have a file size limit of 512kb. Have you tried using your wav file even though it's bigger than 128kb? I'm not 100% sure what the file size limit for sound jingles are, I'm just going by what the wiki says.

So many ways to abuse this.

Fake Übercharge deployments, fake Kritz stickybombs, fake decloaks, fake Sticky trap detonations, etc etc

Darnit, did everything here, and it just doesn't play a sound. I had to go through editing a song, exporting it 10 times, then compressing it with River's LAME codec in .wav format. Placed it in custom/jingley/sound/player/jingle.wav

cl_customsounds 1

bind f "impulse 202"

Nothing, nothing at all.

I expect it to be banned in competitive play then.

Fake anything-demoman-or-medic-related would be so good.

Wohoo, now we can listen to our favourite Hitler speeches, pony themes and goat porn while we're playing the game! What a great idea, Valve!
