Red face Hammer won't launch at all

Whenever I double click on hammer in the Source SDK interface, nothing happens except a command prompt window flashes up for a split second and then disappears. If I try to launch hammer.exe directly from the sourcesdk\bin folder, it's the same story. I've tried reinstalling the SDK, resetting configurations, restarting my computer, and I even tried getting a copy of hammer.exe from a friend. Any ideas/fixes?

P.S. I am not new to mapping.

I launch hammers with a peice of wood lying on top of a brick, so it is balanced, placing the hammer on one side and then jumping on the other side of the wood.

Haha, very funny.

I tried running hammer.exe through a batch file with "pause" after the execution. I get this error:

I don't seem to be having this problem. But I know that Hammer will only run through SDK.

I tried copying SteamAppData.vdf into the bin\config folder. Running hammer through the source SDK and manually both continue to show that error.
