A possible complete fix can come from increasing the size of your Paged Pool Memory manually, through regedit.

http://www.pctools.com/guides/registry/detail/1015/

Please note that in the worst case scenario this may screw up your computer and force you to reinstall your operating system. Do this at your own risk.

You don't actually download DirectX 8 to use that mode. Right click your TF2 in the steam game's list before you launch it, choose properties, then set launch options.

In the set launch options box, type -dxlevel 81

Periodically remove this after each patch or replace it with -dxlevel 90 if that doesn't work to bring the level back up. This will let you check if your game crashes. If it doesn't crash, you can leave it at -dxlevel 90 (But delete the option set launch options) and if it does, you can just put in -dxlevel 81 again.

I have the same issue. I can play for about 2-10 seconds then it locks up and alt+ctrl+del doesn't work at all. I just have to hit the restart button. After installing the orange box my cs:s locks up now but I can play for about 20 mins.

So far, I can confirm that this has worked for me. I did have to cut it short because I do need to get some sleep. But it worked.

I set my "PagedPoolSize" to 300Mb which in bytes is:
31457280

Make sure you reboot your computer once you change this setting. I'll try again tomorrow. Hopefully it'll be good.

Try setting your Page Pool Memory to 1GB or 2GB instead of 300MB.

Remember that you want to type in the amount in bytes, and in decimals, not hexidecimals (unless you prefer base 5 to base 10 when you do math).

I was having the problem with the total lockup requiring a hard reboot, and I run AVG on XP. I removed AVG and lo and behold, crash free! I am now installing Avira Antivir (also free) instead.

I think that if you are having the total system lockup requiring a hard reboot crash then you should definitely try uninstalling your Antivirus.
