2K too good for Australia now!?

Thought it was just Bioshock, but now it looks like all of 2k's games that were previously available on Steam are no longer there for Australian users..

.. thanks, we already get delayed releases, inflated prices, and crappy customer support.. now we don't get digital distribution either.. !?

The Civilization series, Railroad Tycoon series, Pirates, XCom, and Prey are other examples.

Not seeing "only available in the US, Canada and Mexico" was one of the things that drew me to Steam over competing game download platforms.

Now, like Direct2Drive, Gametap, Trygames and just about every other system out there, it looks like it's going to be a matter of clicking on games I like in Steam until I finally discover one that's actually available for purchase in Australia.

If there's one thing I find more frustrating than these distribution problems, it's that Steam keeps taunting me with giant logos for games I can't buy every time I log in...

Oh wow, man - I didn't realise so many games had disappeared when looking at it last night..

I did notice that the price of Civ IV has gone up to $79.90, (ala Activisions COD4 'correction'), but there is no button to actually buy it..!?

They've done the same for Japan too. Yet we're not mentioned in the FAQ as a country the games are not sold in. Either that FAQ is wrong, or in their haste to remove games for sale in Australia, they hit the wrong button for us too. But hey, at least you guys can still buy the games in Australia. They're not even sold locally here. So now, I can't buy them at all.

It looks like steam wants just americans buying games with there program. Im getting over this steam rubbish. Why are we new zealnd and australians forced to buy games at like $90-$100 dollars USA at retail. Steam was a way out of this over priced money hungry publishers. I started buying games off steam (now 60 games) and then BANG, cant get rockstar games and now 2k games have pulled out because i imagine they want us to pay over the top prices. Ive invested into this buy online way and now ive got to go back to the shop. But where i live its an hour drive to the nearest pc store . Guess i dont matter. Time for some gardening. Will have lots more money now.

Take care everyone.

Steam better start doing some work and getting these publishers in line.

The problem is, as far as I'm aware, that the retailers don't like competitors (i.e., Steam) selling the same products as them for half the price. In a perfect world, the retailers would be the ones forced to find a way of lowering their prices to make them competitive (and to be honest, how much does it cost to produce a retail copy of a game?) But unfortunately it looks as if the retailers are banding together to muscle competitive prices out of the market. Not that I can speak for anyone of course.

Really? Where can I read this? Or is that your hunch?

When I'm buying off Steam, I'm purchasing the game from overseas. Retail and Digital Distribution are two complete different things. Just like selling mp3's online vs selling CD's at a retail store. They are going to have to get used to it (and possibly change their business plan to create new streams of revenue), and removing games all together from the site is freaking stupid.

So what would you guess at the reason for a country that doesn't even have that market? =S

It is all about the retail stores, CoD4 publishers jacled up the price of the game because of the retailer. Digital distribution is the thing of the future so retail stores should stop being a bunch of whiners and realise this and create some kind of system that can compete.

Well South Africa has also been excluded, and most of these games are not even availabe in shops, Steam was our only hope, and now this is also taken away. This is really pathetic!!!

Wth? I mean 2K even has a development studio IN AUSTRALIA!? How the heck does that work? Just ridiculous.

I love Steam, I want every game new and old on Steam. I just want to be able to actually purchase them as well.

So.. 2K is going the way of THQ? Tell me why i use Steam again? I was actually planning on buying Pirates through steam, i much prefer the digital download over the boxed retail and yet, here they are stopping me.

Let me be the voice of many gamers
"We WANT to buy your game. Look, here's the money right here, i'll throw it at you! please LET US buy it!!, WHY wont you let us pay you!!"

Wierd huh. Companies not wanting to accept your money. Pigs will be flying soon. Watch the skies! What's next? Region coding?
