Black Screen at TF2 Startup

Hey everyone,

After I load TF2 it opens up to the standard backdrop but then the screen goes black. The music runs and I can hear the different options "click" as I run my mouse over them, but the screen remains black. I tried reinstalling drivers for my graphics card, but that doesn't help.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've restarted Steam, I've re-downloaded and reinstalled TF2, and I've tried running other games that use the new Source Engine (Episode 2) and it works fine.

I'm using an nVidia Quadro 570M with modified drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com. It ran TF2 perfectly before, and even supported Crysis and BioShock so I have no idea why it decided to stop working now.

Anyone else had this problem?

I have the same problem: after the screen with the red valve headed guy, the menu shortly shows and then the screen goes black, switches to desktop, then black again, and stays black. Sometimes it works fine.

Starting the game windowed doesn't cause the problem. You can do this using the -windowed command line parameter.

I don't have this problem when playing Left For Dead. I also had this problem in the past on a previous windows install.

Did you try to start TF2 with launch option of "-novid"?

Just fixed this problem for a friend of mine. Ugly workaround, but a fix nonetheless.

In his case it was caused by the monitor (actually: 1080p hd-tv). It didn't handle the switch to tf2 resolution very well, so the screen went black. But music kept playing, like stated above.

- In windows, switch to a low desktop resolution (1280 x 1024)
- Start tf2, this should now get into the menu.
- set tf2 resolution to desired values
- close tf2
- in windows, set desktop resolution back to normal
- start tf2, from now on this should start up in proper resolution and without black screen

if anyone is still having trouble with this, right click on the game and go to launch options. type -windowed and that should fix it.

I'm having the same issue now. Before my computer would freeze every once in a while, while playing TF2. I would have to reboot my computer to fix it. Now I can't even play the game.
