budget gaming machine, $700
I'm building a new gaming machine to replace my P4 2.4 Ghz. I already have a monitor and OS (WinXP), so just need a box. My primary use is for work and to play CS:S I'll going to try to overclock the CPU and that's about it.See any problems with this rig? What it current consists of: Rosewell ATX Mid Tower 450W - $50 Gigabyte 965P-S3 LGA 775 Intel P965 Express ATX mobo - $82 Sapphire Radeon X1950XT 256 MB - $200 C2D Conroe 1.86 Ghz - $166 GSkill 2GB 240 pin DDR 800 - $82 Western Digital 80GB Sata - $42 Sony DVD/CD - $30 Thermaltake 120mm CPU cooler - $45 |

I have an AMD 4000/Asus A8N SLI Premium and have no plans of changing anytime soon because of Valve's position on dual core code. They said gamers will see the benefit with multi (quad and up) cores, so they're sticking to single core for now. I think some games are coming out that use both cores. Most software is still written for single core--so unless you're downloading bit torrents and gaming, et cetera, at the same time; one core will sit there 99 percent unused with most programs. There are quite a few popular games writing code for dual core though--just not Valve. How long do you plan on having this rig? I'd spring some extra cash and get at least a 2.4 GHz C2D but that's JMO. Good luck with the rig

2:Well, to even get close to that goal you have to get a new processor. Its not weak by any means, but a 6000+ would do much better against crysis. if you wanna run high, another gig o ram is also gonna have to fly into your comp. 3: The ultra is a piece of ????. get the GTX and oc. |
