~~ TF2 Thread of "How to Play..." Videos ~~

Learning all the intricacies of 9 character can be a daunting task so I've compiled all the Team Fortress 2 "How to Play..." videos into one thread for easy access I'm taking the time to compile all the videos so players will become more proficient which will make online play better as more skilled players emerge cool This thread is also for people who learn better with visual aid or just can't be arsed to read through pages of text

NOTE: I did not make any of these videos, I'll list the creator next to the video link

NOTE #2: The default link is for youtube but some also link to GameTrailers which has slightly better quality(specifically word legibility)
sideNote: I wrote this before youtube went high-def, which now has the superior quality

NOTE #3: Remeber to read the video Summary, sometimes the author gives additional info/details on the game or needs to address something a patch changed after they made it

NOTE #4: Not all the links are Tutorials, some are just good frag videos of experienced players for beginner to intermediate player to watch/mimic so they get better. Things like their movement around the level which weapon is best for a situation/character or non-related things, like learning alternate(sometimes quicker/safer) routes from watching random videos, etc.

NOTE #5: Over time some of the videos got taken down or removed, so if you find an alternate working link to a dead video let me know so I can update it, giving you credit for the find, thanks

1) ENGINEER

Few Extra Engie Tips:

• You can rotate your building placement with right-click when its equipped. Use this for the best Sentry placement and to keep teammates from getting disoriented from exiting a wall-facing teleporter
• Remember one lvl 3 sentry > two lvl 1 sentries, so help other Engineers build before starting your own and they'll return the favor
• Never build your Sentry close to another Sentry, this just makes it an easy Target for Demomen or Pyros to take them both out with one attack. Try to put it as far possible(from friendly Sentries) but still able to cover the area you want it. Good strategy is to put Sentries on Opposite sides of a choke point so the enemy has to turn around to attack the other
• To jump on/over your buildings you have to jump-duck (I didn't know this at first and seen several people ask in the video comments)
• Placing teleporters on Stairs/Ramps will slow any enemy advance as they have to jump over/destroy it to pass. A good example is in the second area of Dustbowl on the steps leading up to the last Control Point
• Do Not spend the entire match Turtled behind you Sentry whacking away. If there's no immediate danger feel free to go out to the semi-frontlines but stay close enough to protect your Sentry.
• Use your Dispenser to Block Doorways ~ It'll block cloaked Spies and alert you when someone is infiltrating your base (Most useful on CTF maps like 2Fort upstairs)
• When low on Metal and Turtling against attacking foes ONLY hit your Wrench when the Sentry is Damaged. Otherwise you will Waste Metal refilling your Ammo instead of Healing
• Whenever your Sentry is Destroyed move it to a different spot to keep the enemy guessing/surprised
• Don't build your Sentry & Dispenser directly next to each other. I usually build my Sentry near a Metal Spawn and put my Dispenser closer to the front-lines to help attacking foes.
• Lastly don't build a Sentry by the Second Control Point during pre-Round set up(see too many Engies doing this)
• A fun trick on CTF maps(like 2Fort) is to try and get into the enemy Intelligence room and set up camp(teleporter,sentry,dispenser) inside. For open maps like Well try putting the Teleporter on the upstairs balcony hidden from view.

Post Engineer Update(Teammates):

• If you standing near a Dispenser healing always spam you weapon(esp Pyro/Heavy) to deter/uncover any cloaked/disguised Spies. This goes double since Spies now have infinite cloak with metal and our upgradable entrances are high priority
  
• If you spawn and see a level 1 or 2 Entrance temporarily switch to Engineer and upgrade it to level 3. That way the Engineer can use the metal to upgrade his Sentry/Dispenser instead of upgrading the Exit.
  (Medics don't bother, we need you at the front-lines to build your Uber/Kritz)
  
• Red team during PayLoad or Control Point pre-round setup-- if you're a non-Engie/Medic --stay back and upgrade the entrances. The Engineer should have the Exit up before the round starts allowing you to port right into the action.
• I_Lack_Pants Added: If you spawn and see a sapped teleporter entrance don't waste time chasing the Spy, instead quickly switch to Engineer and take the sapper off. This way the Engineer doesn't have to backtrack to the spawn leaving his buildings vulnerable.

How to Spot a Spy:

• You can pass through Teammates but Spies will block your path
• Cloaked Spies will flicker when they are hit or touch an Enemy
  NOTE: Spies using Dead Ringer do Not flicker/shimmer when hit/bumped
• Someone who goes out of their way to avoid you
• Anyone with the Same name as you
• If you see anyone(besides an Engineer) standing on a Dispenser/Sentry they are a Spy
• If an Engineer is sitting on a building with his Shotgun(ie Primary) out, do a Spy check to make sure
• If anyone is standing on your own buildings they are a Spy
• Don't let THIS happen to you (Youtube)
• Kuiper Added: Spies getting healed by (enemy) Medics will appear to have Buffed HP
• Kuiper Added: If you see a teammate standing next to a Dispenser but their Health bar does Not increase, they are a Spy
• If you see a Health or Ammo Pack disappear with no one around, a cloaked Spy took it
• If there are X players on a Control Point/Payload, but the Capture Speed is LESS than X someone is a Spy
  Note: Remember Scouts capture at 2X speed
• miikeeh Added: If you shoot a Sticky and it bounces off thin air, immediately detonate it, because it hit a Spy (stickies don't cause cloaked Spies to shimmer)
• miikeeh Added: Sometimes the Spy's will let off a (disguised character specific) emote taunt after sapping and destroying a Sentry/Building
• If a Spy's "Death" seemed way too easy they might be using the Dead Ringer so stay alert or continue spamming(Pyros). Also pay attention for the very distinct Dead Ringer de-clock sound
• BaggyGirdle Added: If you have your knife out and come near an "ally's" back and you get into backstab stance (Knife held high, pointed down), stab. It's an enemy spy
• Supertycooon Added: If a spy dosen't have a ski mask then he isn't an enemy spy, since you always get one when you disguise

How to NOT Spot a Spy: (Updates & Patches)

• Spies will have between 50% and 100% health, so Spy-check anyone with Low but not Critical(red) health
  UpdatE: As of 5/21/09 Spies can now pick-up Health packs to increase their "disguised health"
• Anyone whose health is in the Red is NOT a Spy, no need to spy-check critical teammates
  UpdatE: As of 5/21/09 a Spy's "disguise health" now matches their disguise target's health(even if they are Critical )
• A Medic without an Ubercharge Meter or a Spy w/o a "Disgused as.." label
  UpdatE: As of 5/21/09 Spy-Medics now have an Ubercharge Meter and Spy-Spies get a random "Disguised as.." label
• Spies will Always have their Primary weapon out. Most easiest to spot is a Medic wielding the Syring Gun instead of the Medigun/Kritzkrieg Gun
  UpdatE: As of 3/24/09 Spies can choose their currently held weapon by pressing "last disguise"
• Friendly Spies will have a paper covering their face showing who they are disguised as, so if you see a "friendly" Spy without a paper Spy Check(shoot,melee,bump) to make sure
  UpdatE: As of 5/21/09 Spies now get a random mask when disguised as an enemy Spy
• Kuiper Added: Spies can have anywhere between 50% and 100% health, non inclusive. So, anyone with full health or low health is not a spy
  UpdatE: As of 5/21/09 a Spy's health will Mimic the "disguised target's" Health
• miikeeh Added:Any Dispenser or Payload beam ending in thin air is healing an invisible Spy
  UpdatE: As of 1/28/09 cloaked spies no longer have particle-beam effect while standing next to a dispenser

bE a Team Medic:

• During the pre-round setup remember to Buff everyone's health which raises to 150%, don't just focus on 1 person (buffing also increases your Uber-charge)
• While Healing constantly move/jump around to avoid being an easy target for Spies/Snipers than if you just run in a straight line
• If you rush a group of enemies with an Uber and the odds are still stacked against you, fall back when your Uber runs out, its more important for you to stay alive
• Remember to Heal other Medics, they need Health Buffs as much as the Attackers
• Uber 2 People at Once: when you stop Ubering someone it stays on them for like a second after, so if you're quick enough you can cycle between two people. This will also make the Kritzkrieg Gun much more effective.
• Don't hide in the Base Healing some Random person(ie Engie/Snipe) when people are on the Front lines taking damage
• Kritzkrieg Users ~ IF the enemy has several Sentry's guarding their CP switch to the Medigun because Buildings are invulnerable to Crits
• Before just Ubering the closest person access the situation and determine which class would be more beneficial to your attack
• When fighting a Sentry(Uber) its best to run in front of the person you're Ubering to draw fire away. Useful to negate the knockback so the Uberee can get closer
• If the enemy has a Heavily Fortified defense, hold onto your Uber for a simultaneous attack with another Medic

Dear Medic REcipients:

• Protect the Medic at all COst ~ Don't let an Enemy(esp Pyro) rush past you so he has a Free kill on the Medic
• When you call for a "Medic" don't run back to the resupply locker forcing the Medic you chase you down
• When you call for a "Medic" Don't clump together with teammates so that it's hard for the Medic to "hit" you with the Medigun
• Don't linger in Open areas prone to Snipers, stick close to areas with Cover for the Medic
• Damaging yourself while in transit to the front lines or in a safe area will build your Uber-charge meter faster
• Start making a push Forward when the Uber is ready to be deployed
• If you're hurt near a resupply, letting the Medic heal you will build his Uber faster and cost you no more than a few seconds
• If you can absorb damage, don't be afraid to stand on the path of the bullets Medics can heal you faster than they can regenerate health
• Warn your medic ASAP if you see Impending Doom approaching (ie. a Pyro or two that you know you can't kill in time)
• Do Not run backwards while Ubered, you are Invincible act like it!
• When the Medic runs in Front of you that means Turn around
• When you are Ubered and see an enemy Uber do NOT waste time/ammo attacking them, focus on the people who are not invincible

Dear Other Teammates:

• Remember a Sentry always shoots the closest enemy, so as long as you stay behind the Uber you'll be safe and can help in the attack
• When an Uber rushes a cluster of enemies follow behind to assist in the attack. Usually the enemy is too distracted by the Uber to notice you shooting and it'll make the Uber much more effetive

How to Effectively Detect Spies by Kurrus -- Detailed FAQ on Detecting/Eliminating enemy Spies by Class (thanks to Kurrus for the link)

All Class Tip:

• While running by yourself or to a destination always have your melee weapon out swinging to catch any unsuspecting Spies who happen across your path. Most effective when rounding corners, doorways or narrow hallways.
  Don't Bother: Pyro, Heavy, Spy
• Spectating is a great way to learn new tactics. If a player is dominating a match spectate and see what he's doing
• Turn on Quick-switch-Weapons, the added time can be the difference between life-and-death
• When you're Ubered/Fighting and run out of ammo(specifically Soldier,Demo) don't be afraid to switch to your Melee or Secondary Weapon. You can kill a lot faster than if you shoot-reload-repeat
• Never run in a straight line always keep your movements erratic to avoid being an easy target for Snipers or Backstabbing Spies
• Remember Sentry's always attack the closest person so if an uber rushes in to take out a Sentry you can help in the attack unharmed as long as you stay behind the uber
• When you see an Uber do NOT waste ammo attacking them(see too many doing this), instead try to flank behind the Medic then attack as soon as it wears off. This doesn't pertain to the Demo's Stickies and Pyro Airblast which can knock them around negating its effectiveness
• BaggyGirdle Added: Even if you don't have a mic, use the text to communicate/strategize with your team (for example: Spy/Sentry locations, etc.)
• BaggyGirdle Added:
  Use the voice commands(default "z, x, c" keys) to quickly communicate information like: "Spy!", "Incoming", "Need a Sentry/Tele/Dispenser here" or just to say "Thanks" after a Medic heals you

Working with a friend on How to play Demoman. ( ya the friend does all the writing , i suck at it :3 )

Don't expect anything unusual , but atleast it will look better than the 53k view no-action demoman tutorial that has a repeating song!!

I mean , who would like to see a vid about demoman that includes this :

Grenade Launcher

64-132 (284-296 crit)

Your primary weapon that delivers
pain instantly when it hits the target.
Depending on your enemy's
speed and how far he is from you,
you have to predict where your
target will run and fire before
he gets there.

Sticky Launcher

108-160 (336-353 crit)

Your secondary weapon fires powerful
remote-detonated sticky bombs.
As a defensive class you will use this
gun to defend control points
and tight spaces, and kick some ♥♥♥ at
medium range!
Set traps in places
where you expect the enemy to attack
or use it for medium range combat.
Just like grenade launcher -
predict enemy movement
and blow them into pieces.

Bottle

43-87 (195 crit)

Your final weapon, the bottle is a last
resort for when you're out of ammo
or the enemy is at extremely close range.

When fighting in open areas
switch between your two main weapons.
Lay a few stickies on the ground to protect
yourself or block enemies in, then
blast them with grenades.

If the enemy gets too close
you're in trouble!
Use sticky bombs to keep them away
or switch to grenades and go for
direct hits if they're at short range.
( this happens to end with a double K.O. )

Destroying sentry guns is your primary
role when attacking.
Stay out of sight and arc your grenades
and stickies over obstacles to
destroy them. 3 sticky bombs will
take down a sentry gun.

Ruin enemy sticky traps by blowing
them away with your own.
This has also a good use when
it comes to protecting your teams
sentry guns.

Sticky jumping is an important ability
for a demoman. It lets you move around
the maps much faster, jump on to control
points and over the enemy to surprise them.
Simply run over a sticky, jump and detonate.
To jump higher perform a crouch-jump.
The closer you are to the sticky when it
blows the further you fly and the more
damage you take.

But first take a look at
how you shouldn't perform
a sticky jump.

SCOUT

The scout is your worst enemy.
Keep him away with sticky bombs
on the ground, predict his movements
and aim well ahead for direct hits with
grenades to take him down.

SNIPER

The sniper is very vulnerable while
aiming through the scope.
Sticky jump up to him and use the
bottle for a humiliating kill, or
spam grenades to ruin his aim.

PYRO

Keep the pyro at medium range with
sticky bombs, and use
grenades to finish him off.
If he gets close , use dodgy sneaky tactics.

HEAVY

The heavy is fat, slow and deadly.
Stay out of sight and land 3 or 4
sticky bombs near him,
or switch to grenades and
go for accurate hits.

I would, any bit of help is welcome, some people need to see things multiple times before they catch onto it.
Don't try to compare yourself to some of the other how-to videos, just do you best, everyone gets better with practice

Yeah I know it was the best I could find, didn't see any Tutorial Sniper videos..

Guess it may look that way but remember the video is heavily edited to just show the best shot, if he got all those head-shots in a row then its safe to assume he's hacking.
