Counter-Strike 1.6 Beta Available

There is a Counter-Strike 1.6 Beta available to all existing Counter-Strike owners. To opt into the Beta, run steam://install/150. The focus of this beta is on the dedicated server component, in particular the Linux piece. Here are the specific changes:

Integrated Steam Community features into Counter-Strike
- In-game player name now automatically uses player's Steam Community name
- Avatars are displayed on the scoreboard)

Other fixes
- Prevented some cvar exploits (thanks to AnAkIn for pointing them out)

8/29/2008
The linux server has been updated to fix the new engine not being updated correctly. Make sure to install the beta into a NEW folder when using a dedicated server (the client will automatically do this, the beta on the client side does NOT interfere with normal game). Run the hldsupdatetool to get this update.

9/12/2008

- Enabled crosshair selection
- Got hltv running with the beta
- Fixed A2S_RULES not returning data

9/15/2008

- Added "-noaff" option for dedicated servers so it won't bind to CPU 0 on windows

9/17/2008
- Fixed crash on shutdown

9/23/2008
- Assorted bug fixes
- Removing locking of player name to community name

9/26/2008
- Fixed "Steam validation rejected" error on connect
- Added "bannedcfgfile" cvar so you can control the file written to by the writeid command

Awesome indeed, now we just need some servers!

Oh and I wonder how well the CS community is going to take the community name = in-game name.

A: NO! The using steam friends name ingame is a "feature" that I absolutely loathe.

B: In the options there are no options to change your crosshair. The drop down box has nothing in it and the translucent, etc checkmark boxes are missing.

quick question , since all HL1 games have the same system (engine ,fyle structure etc) can we assume that this sysem will be appliaed to all HL1 games after the beta ends? or those games will have betas of their own

Some of the base engine changes will apply to the other HL1 engine games but the in game UI piece (in particular the scoreboard and name changes) are game specific and won't be rolled out to every game.

Is the 'Change your name using the settings dialog' supposed to open the desktop settings window? I have the overlay enabled, shouldn't it open there?

It could be, if it's engine code then it can easily be used for every GoldSrc Game, although if it's client/server code it may take a bit of tweaking depending on the game.

It not dropping me to desktop. It just opens in the background. I'm on Vista 32 if it matters.

Also, any chance of renaming 'Player List' to 'Mute Players' as it's all the option does anymore.
