GRAW and GRAW2 won't load, hangs at black screen

I bought the complete package today and GRAW ust hangs at a black screen. I get the initial splash screen then nothing.

GRAW2 is pretty much the same, loads to 50% on the splash then just hangs. I have to kill it via the Task Manager.

Vista 64
4GB ram
ATi 4870 Crossfire
All latest available drivers.

Did you ever solve for this problem?

Nope. I gave up on the game and wrote off the 50 bucks. Last Ubicrap game I'll ever buy.

I don't think anyone would blame you for being frustrated. It seems like most people haven't had this problem. Have you contacted Steam Support about the issue and/or tried to troubleshoot it? It's quite possibly a corrupted download or conflict on your system.

I tried the usual, different graphics drivers, not that there's that many available for 4870XFire, chipset drivers, reinstalling. The games just refused to work. With many people having to fight to get Crosscom working, and numerous reports of corrupted missions, I never bothered going any further.

I had a similar issue with the downloaded version of Mass Effect from the EA store. It turned out to be a DRM issue. EA/Bioware had a lot of complaints about the downloaded version. I suspect this the same sort of problem. I solved the ME issue by using my key on a pirated dvd version. Alas I didn't get a serial with my Steam copies of GRAW. At some point I might decide to fight with this again, just any time soon.

Hang to black screen under Vista

Anyone find a solution to this?

I've just bought the GR pack in the weekend deal and ... can't play GRAW!

Startup; splash screen; goes to black after changing resolution; hang. Need to eventually kill graw.exe via Task Manager.

I've tried a bunch of things from the net (updating to latest drivers; putting '/quiet' on command line; disabling second monitor) to no avail.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

I've:
- Visa Home Premium;
- Core2 6600 processor + 4gb ram;
- NVidia 8800GTS;
- Creative X-Fi Gamer;
- Dual monitors (if that makes a difference).

Even tried this - left it running for an hour with no progress.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Cya,
Andrew.

Thanks for the suggestion, but didn't work. (Disabled second monitor through the nvidia control panel, then started Steam, then GRAW. Same problem.)

Regards,
Andrew.

Wootski - am getting somewhere. Seems as though it's my Creative X-Fi sound card. Disabled that through the Device Manager and was able to get past my blank screen into the Ubisoft intro logo movie + game config screen.

No sound, natch, but still ... that's my problem and I'm not floundering around without direction.

Now ... need to find a work-around...

Cya,
Andrew.

Sorry for the multiple posts.

Am stuck - can either play without sound (sound card disabled); or can hang with black screen after splash after launching GRAW (sound card enabled).

Anyone know of a fix/patch/work-around to get my sound card working? As mentioned above, it's a Creative X-Fi (Fatal1ty XtremeGamer Pro). I'm running Vista Home Premium.

I've tried:
- reinstalling the latest driver software (v2.18.0008, cleaning first using DriverSweeper in windows safe mode - am fairly sure there is no old driver crap hanging around);
- replacing (after backing up) the OpenAL32.dll and wrap_oal.dll drivers in the GRAW root directory with the latest ones from Creative's ALchemy;
- Disabling soundblaster extensions (heck - tried turning off almost all settings) through the driver;
- sacrificing a goat by moonlight.

Nothing has worked so far.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks in advance.
Cya,
Andrew.

Okay ... gave up ...

Guys/Gals,

Just thought I'd post to close the loop.

Distracted with left4dead in the interim, I finally came back to GRAW. Downloaded GRAW2 and got exactly the same problem - I could either hang on black screen at start, or could disable the sound card to play the game.

I give up.

I backed up the game through steam, copied the game to an old (XP) laptop, re-imported the game and I'm off. True, it's with all the settings turned down, but at least I can play.

Don't bother buying this game if you have Vista. It's a great game only if you have XP.

Cya,
Andrew.

I had a similar issue. It turned out to be my monitor cable (DVI) when I switched to the 15 pin VGA cable the problem was solved. The weird thing about it was none of my other games (25 or so) had any issue using the DVI cable.

Just tried GRAW2 on my 3870x2 Vista x64 and get this error from graw2 itself:

Crash in application version: 0.3048

Could not load context.xml

It worked just fine the last time I tried it a couple months ago.

Also windows event viewer/application gives this error:
ExtraInfo Context: Application, SystemIndex Catalog Details: A device attached to the system is not functioning. (0x8007001f)
Entry C:\WINDOWS\ASSEMBLY\TMP\GGVHWIXC\__ASSEMBLYINFO__. INI

Seems to be a DRM issue.

I also run the game in xp mode or an other resolution and nothing change I use the latest 9.11 drivers
