Those wondering about compatibility of the x-com games

For those wondering if they can run it on Vista
Quote:
Some details on what versions we put up there:

1) UFO Defense: This is the DOS-based version of 1.4. We use DOSBox
2) Apocalypse: Retail version, also running DOSBox.
3) Interceptor: version 1.2 for Windows
4) Enforcer: 1.0 for Windows

All have been tested and run fine in Vista.

TFD is still the Windows version, but I do intend to update that to use DOSBox at some point so we get Vista compatibility.

For Apocalypse, is DOSBox run seamlessly? As in, I run Apocalypse from the Steam launcher and it just goes straight into the game. Or (since I already own the game) would I be better off just trying to get DOSBox to work on my own?

I think $4.50 is pittance, by the way, so I really wouldn't mind buying the game again.

Everything should work fine. If there is a problem after all, post here and I'll try to help. Alternatively you can go to either www.xcomufo.com/forums or www.strategycore.co.uk/forums

StrategyCore also has lots of goodies in the file section.

What are the minimum req. for UFO Defense, Terror from the Deep and Apocalpse ?

Since they need DosBox the req should be different from those stated in the store page.

By the way, if you got the whole pack, there is a patch for TFTD that you can try. It's not guaranteed to work, so do post here and I'll see if we can get to the bottom of the problem.

In the not-too-distant-future we will be updating TFD to use DOSBox like we do with UFOD so it gains Vista compatibility. I'm fiddling with that when I get a chance, so look for that soon.

I'm told it's save game compatible with the DOS version, which is key...I don't want angry fans coming after me because we updated the game on Steam and deleted their save files in the process.

When we do this though we'll leave the Windows version for those who prefer it.

This is fantastic news. I've just bought the complete pack (though I already had TFD when it first got released on STEAM but sadly never got it working in VISTA). If you guys can fix TFD or get a DOS version re-issued that would be the cherry on the cake. Gotta go as I need to start playing the new pack I downloaded

Yes, the save files are compatible as far as I'm aware (it's Gimli by the way ). If you want, you can test a bit more, but I am 99% sure that the only difference between the Windows and DOS versions was making it DirectX compatible and a few changes in the research tree.
Oh and, a launcher for the Windows version would be nice for UFO, too. That is, if you can somehow make sure that people will know it will not work on Vista. Perhaps put "will not work on Vista" in the brackets?

Sorry for the double post.

I can be quite thick sometimes.
I mentioned the research differences, and yet it didn't occur to me that it could create problems. As you may know there are differences in the research trees between the two versions. Suppose that in one version you met the requirements to research an alien artifact, and could clearly see it on the research list. Now lets assume that the requirements of the other version are not the same and you don't meet them, then what? it all depends on how that list is created. It's most likely that there is no problem, but I'll have someone check just in case.

I got TFTD when it came to steam, but I never got managed to slow the scroll speed to make it playable.(xp32)
Is there a solution to this yet?
Also I'm wanting to buy the package, is there any scroll issues wth any of them?

I assume you have already set the scroll speed to 1 in the options?
If you have, go here.

That actually worked for me with TFTD. Thanks!

I downloaded Turbo and I can now get it to work making it playable, not perfect but playable.

You first have to set cpu affinity to 1 core (I have quad core 6600 xp32) and then set turbo to 1 or 2.

Important dont set Turbo first or it wont work.

Thanks for the help.

Honestly TFTD works well in Windows, you can use Virtual PC to emulate it for Vista...While the UFO version may be better in DOS, TFTD is clearly better in Windows, with more bugs fixed, and so on...

I agree, but the problem is that people want it working as soon as they install it (look a few threads below), which is reasonable. You also have to take into account that some people don't know/don't want to configure a VM. Besides, as per Jason2K's words, there will be a Windows version of UFO soon, too.
