Vista Ultimate x64 & Half Life 2

AS the topic says, problems with x64 & HL2, most notibly, playing a new game at point insertion; after I leave the train I get the node graph re-building message! So I exited the game, checked steam and it was updating half life 2 files.

After this I launched the game again, loaded up my save game, got the node graph re-building error again and then AI disabled. I exited and tried to start a new game, same thing happens as the g-man speaks!! I searched a few forums, and found the switch to enable 32 bit mode, went in... works perfect, save game, reload, works perfect!!! Try in 64 bit again!! Same errors.

Ive tried all the tweaks, console commands that are out there and nothing, they are not working for me!!! In 64 bit mode, HL2 simply will not run the AI, period, but in 32 bit its fine.

Now I have 64 bit machine, a 64 bit OS and a game that runs in 64 bit so what the hell is going on!! Ive had half life 2 now for over 2 years and on XP x86 no problems, even on vista x86 no problems, but on vista x64 running the game in 64 bit, not a sniff!!

And before anyone says, the game is 110% legal, as ive read the posts on various forums about how people getting this error should stop using warez copies, well i can safely say it is the game of the year edition, purchased in DVD form but then just installed since registration using the steam clients downloader.

Ive even deleted the game cache and downloaded and installed again, no change.

Theres got to be a way other than console commands to sort this, a multi billion dollar company such as valve surely cannot have been so simple as to allow a bug like this to surface.

PC Spec
Vista Ultimate X64 With Service Pack 1
AMD Athlon X2 4200+
Akasa Evo Blue Cooler running at full speed
MSI K9N SLi Platinum Board
2GB GeiL PC6400 Low latency memory
160GB SATA2 HD
Creative XFi Extreme Audio Sound Card
2x MSI GeForce 8600GT 256MB O/C Edition in SLi mode

Anyway, i thank anyone who offers assistance, it will be much appreciated.

Regards

Paul

Just try running the game in the 32bit engine mode. Set "-32bit" as the launch command.

I have already done that, and know it works fine! what i want is a permanent solution to the 64 bit problem. Everytime i release 32 bit mode and run in native 64 bit i get the node graph and ai dosabled error!!!

I mean, i dont mine running the game in 32 bit, but on a 64 bit rig with a 64 bit os i should be able to run in 64 bit.... Its not too much to ask from valve is it?

Who says it's entirely Valve's doing? Vista 64-bit isnt' exactly 100 percent bug-free.

Vista doesn't work properly. Valve isn't responsible for Vista being a pile of steaming garbage that doesn't work with plenty of existing hardware and software. That sits firmly on microsoft.

Well, i know Microsoft have a lot to answer for in the form of bugs & problems over the year, but vista 64 works just fine with all my hardware & I have x64 drivers for everything.

As far as who is to blame, well... Crysis runs just fine in x64 mode and so does Far Cry! I beleive STALKER can also run in x64 mode on a 64 bit OS, well, that runs even better than it did on XP....

Half Life 2 is the only game that I have ran into problems with when getting it to run as a 64 bit app instead of dumbed down back into 32!!! So as my other 64 bit games run fine, then it cant be a vista problem can it?

Would it make a difference that I have Half Life 2 installed on a XP drive? that i still use from time to time, or is Valves anti-piracy software not bothered how many OS's you have installed on cos its all just tied to your steam account anyway?? Im just trying to rule out everything, as to why its only 64 bit thats at fault.

Well sure, you can try doing the possible fix listed below:

ai_norebuildgraph "1"

Your config file is located in the game's directory which is located in the SteamApps folder. For example:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\< Steam Account Name >\counter-strike\cstrike\config.cfg
or
C:\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\< Steam Account Name >\counter-strike\cstrike\config.cfg

And if the solution given from Mr.Sierra Oscar isn't workig on you simply toss the Vista and go buy a Windows XP SP2 !

Everybody hates Vista cuz it has LOTS of bugs...If microsoft don't stop the Vista Productions and keep up with Windows XP's updates and productions, they'll have from all of us Vista Haters a mass amount of prosecutions !

As I said, ive tried all the solutions, including that one! It doesnt work, I guess i could be happy running the game in 32 bit mode, after all, all of my other games work fine, ading them commands to the config stops the node graph error, but ai is still disabled. Ive even tried command lining the ai line in the console but it doesnt work.

As for binning it, I own a copy of XP Pro anyway, and I have that installed on another drive that im not using at present, but felt like moving to a 64bit platform. That critism isnt really constructive though is it? just bin it if it dont work!

Thing is ive got vista 64 running quicker and more reliably than my XP install ever did, even the 32bit version of half life 2 didnt run as well on XP as it does on vista 64, its just the 64 bit version doesnt work on vista 64, and since all my other games, programs utilities etc. etc. etc. work superbly on vista 64, i refuse to accept that i should merely bin it cos halflife 2 doesnt work in 64 bit. There has to be a software level fix, not just console commands!!

The error is not specific to Vista at all, it is specific for 64 bit operating systems. The error can also occur with XP running in 64 bit mode.

Although it's a bit buggy, I played HL2 in 64-bit mode for a while and didn't notice any type of performance increase or any other change to the core gameplay. I realize the OP just wants to run it in 64-bit mode, but you're really gaining nothing by doing so...at least nothing that I've noticed, that is.

Thing is, it just p***es me off when i cant get things working like that... like i said, im not bothered about having to downgrade to 32 bit in reality, but id at least like the opportunity to sample it in 64 bit mode, even if its no better, more specifically because ive got a 64 bit cpu and got myself a 64 bit os!!

Ive been a gamer (multplayer mainly) since quake 2 and half life came about in the late 90s, so im accustomed to doing all i can to get the best performance out of a game, even if it means running an older OS, but this time the OS is fine, its the architecture thats the problem, i just would have liked to have been able to choose which i thought performed better, 32 or 64 bit for myself!!!

cheers for all your help, if theres no additional ways or ideas to get past this then i guess i give up.

The thing is, with your system set up as it is, you should be able to run the game smoothly. You really would not notice the difference at all I would guess.
