Finally bought it, and I regret it
OK, I bought the game. They lowered it to $20, which seemed fair. Notice that past tense of that last phrase. Seemed fair ... until I found out it does not support widescreen resolution.
I know, I should have done some research beforehand but like anyone, sometimes I take things for granted. Like a game released in 2006 (and marketed synergistically with Civ 4 which does have it) would have widescreen support. But no. The salt in the wound? There is a setting for resolution and bit depth in the config XML file ... with a nice little note that says "this setting doesn't work yet." Yet was THREE YEARS AGO. So, yeah, there is no way I could recommend this game to anyone. I just basically wasted $20 unless I can figure out how to run it in windowed mode, or Nvidia fixes the scaling bug in their drivers. |

I played through some of the tutorial last night and it was pretty fun. I guess if you are playing this with WINE on linux for windowed mode (I don't know if it actually works with WINE) or have a 4:3 monitor (1280x1024) and are a fan of the genre then this could be an OK game for you. So far gameplay is at least OK.
Too bad I'll never in my life again own a 4:3 monitor and the game absolutely does not support widescreen. Also, considering this game was apparently released and then abandoned by the developers, I still can't recommend it. If Firefly can't be troubled to release more than one patch, then what is the point? I think I'm just angry because it was this game or Children of the Nile and I realize now I should have bought Children of the Nile, which was released in 2004, yet is still supported by its devs Tilted Mill and has *gasp* widescreen support. A game that is about 2 years older yet is still alive. I'll never buy another Firefly game, that is for sure. If they are still even in business. EDIT: I also wanted to mention that you can change the resolution in the xml file found in your user Documents folder. But it doesn't appear to actually do anything. Everything is still all stretched out and fugly. DAMN YOU NVIDIA SCALING BUG!!! (shakes fist at crappy drivers and goes to Newegg to look up ATI 4870 prices). 1680x1050 via XML on nVidia works
For what it's worth it seems they fixed the resolution problem.
There are still no widescreen options in the pre-run configuration, but if you edit CivCityRom.GraphicsSettings.xml (in My Documents\CivCity Rome) so the resolution line is: Code:
<resolution width="1680" height="1050" format="X8R8G8B8" refreshRate="60"/> nVidia GTX 260 with 195.62 drivers. |

To think that you paid $20, while now it costs $0.91 if buying via the UK...

I have a question. By the very first start of this game, you see that screen to change Graphicdetails, Textures..... Now I checked it that it will never come back by starting the game. But now, I want it back but I can't.. How can I do this? Regards Mathew |

Just delete the file CivCityRom.GraphicsSettings.xml (in My Documents\CivCity Rome).

1920 / 1080 does not work for me, lower stuff seems to work, or maybe it does not like 16:9.

1920x1080 works for me, no black bars. The only graphical glitch is that the counters during missions, such as how much wheat I've stored for Rome, how many Insular I've built and how many loans I have remaining.
That graphic is two parts, the symbol, and the colored circle that fills the circumfrence. At widescreen setting, the symbol is fine, but the colored circle gets squished to a verticle oval. It still functions correctly, it's just odd to see it outside the 'track' around the symbol it's supposed to be on. |
