January 14th Patch Desktop Crashes

UPDATE:
PATCH RELEASED ROUGHLY 5PM EST, JAN 15TH.

right as the game is starting up and the camera is about to enter the footsteps of the characters, the game stutters/freezes and back to the desktop i go. only happens after patch. any fix ideas?

UPDATE: Response from Valve's Jay Stelly:

Quote:
Based on the minidumps we've received through steam, we've identified a crash that is affecting some systems with ATI video cards. We're testing a fix now. This is probably the crash affecting most users in this thread (previous generation ATI card experiencing a crash right when the game starts). Assuming the testing is successful we'll have an update out shortly to address the crash.
Response is on page 15.

Same, I have an ATI all in wonder 9600 series on windows XP. I updated it to the most recent drivers (8.12 12/10/2008) and verified game cache.

M processor is a p4 @ 3.2ghz, and I have 1.5 gb of ram.

Anyone get this to work yet?

Others have gotten their games to work, however I cannot load a game without getting a stuttering screen and crashing to the desktop.

Same instant crash problem here as well. My dedicated server crashes too. Maybe the two problems are tied together.

Same deal in a single player game, it started up and I saw the little helicopter saying to go to the hospital bit at the beginning, and then the game crashed as it was zooming into the back of my players head.

Same thing is happening here too with:
Radeon 9800 Pro
1 GB of RAM
AMD Sempron 1.5Ghz 2200

Stuttering screen then the game crashes.
No error appears on screen.

This is a very big problem, I can't even play single player.

The problem happens when I try to take control of a player. I can spectate, but when I try to join, the game crashes.

i had some serious stuttering since patch that tends to go away after a minute then comes back at the beginning of the next level.

Same problem, I can see the intro to nm as the helicopter flies over, as soon as the camera goes into first person it crashes to desktop.
