Lightbulb Ability to Change Chat Message Notification Sound

I personally hate it. It's overly loud and jarring. I use headphones which makes it even worse. Say I'm working on a map in Hammer, listening to music so I have the volume up, and a message comes through after a few minute lapse between messages. The sound always surprises me, makes me jump, and jars me out of what I'm doing.

Now I would just turn it off and rely on the window flashing to notify me but when you have several chat windows, the main steam window open, and the friends list they all stack into one tab on the taskbar (at least in XP they do). If I receive a message that one button won't flash to notify me.

So my suggestion is simple.

Best Option: Let users browse and set their own .wav's for the message sound.

Next Best: Provide more sounds and the option to change between them.

At Least: Make it so that the stacked taskbar tab flashes when you receive a message from any of the minimized chat windows regardless of the amount of windows you have stacked in that single tab.

I might be missing some kind of hidden option here, but I've looked and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to fix this issue.

You can replace the following default sounds.

Program Files\Steam\resource
voice_busy.wav
voice_dialling.wav
voice_ringing.wav
warning.wav

Program Files\Steam\Servers
game_ready.wav

If you do change the files that eram mentioned be sure to make them short and something easily heard and identifiable. I like to use some of the cannon fire from battle grounds (HL2 mod) so that when I'm flaying TF2 I don't mistake it as enemy fire. You can get the BG here http://www.bgmod.com/ and after you install the game the cannon sounds should be here C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods\bg2\sound\weapons \cannon

Having an actual Steam GUI to allow the changes would make it a lot more user friendly and easier to change. Good idea.

The sound I'm talking about is located in the Winui.gcf under the friends folder message.wav If there's a program to allow modifying .GCF's then I could change it.

I highly support this thread and am bumping it. The default friend message received sound is AWFUL, but turning it off means I miss messages all the time. I remember on my old mac I had Adium for AIM and I had a sound scheme that was a perfect combination of soft tones. I never mistook them for something else and they never interrupted my thought process or were overly loud and obnoxious, all of which the steam default sound is.

PLEASE let us change that message.wav

Bump FOR GREAT JUSTICE. (and for not making a brand new dupe thread)

Seriously, that friend chat message notification (out of game)is half-killing me every time. Plus it's so much louder than the rest of my PC sounds so whenever I'm listening to music- and I never listen to it very loud but you know how all files don't have the same volume from an album/artist to another so you always end up touching it- I can't help but jump out of my skin at the loudness.
I hate it. I need to change it, badly.

It's so bad it makes me want to slap in the mouth anyone that send me a chat for making me jump like this, even if it's not their fault.
It's sure that since I'm working in the 3D field I use my computer for work all the time so I'm already not in a good mood for being surprise-beeped when I'm concentrating, but dang!

So! I've read everything as what I understand is that, like Cintecian, the specific sound I'd like to modify for something much milder can't be tampered with as it's in the .GCFs? Is that it?
Is my only option to plainly turn the sound off?

Thanks a lot!

I finally replaced the message.wav succesfully!

Every time I changed the wav, and I restarted Steam, the old message.wav returned, but now, I changed it again to a much more soft sound, and set it to "ONLY READ".

Now Steam can not change it back and I'm cool with my new sound!

Here are the steps:

- Grab a sound.
- Convert it to wav.
- Go to Steam/Friends.
- Replace message.wav with the new sound. Name it message.wav again.
- Set it to "Only read".
- ????????
- MASSIVE PROFIT.

Also, many new sound for steam:

OM NOM NOM NOM, DELICIOUS REP. You're welcome!

I'm glad that you liked that dirty way to replace the sound. I was pretty bugged about it too. Too loud and ugly...

From now on, every time you replace something and some app revert the changes you made, mark as Only Read.

That tip sure will help you lot's of times.
At least it worked for me with a couple of apps. xD

I'll try to help.

What happens to you? Are you sure that you check the "Only read" box? It shouldn't come back to the original sound...

And the folder where that sound is stored is: "X:\XXXXX\Steam\friends"

Glad to help!

Well I think the new ones are TOO QUIET.

This may be the exact opposite of what you want, but is there any way to change the sounds to how it was before the new "Web 2.0" STEAM?
