Stats: For a typical server

I’ve been working on some code over the last few weeks with the intent to parse my server logs to gather statistics and information. I ran it last night across logs from 12 December 2008 through to 20 January 2009 (40 days). The stats recorded are for Versus games only. I ignored all Coop games, mainly because you cannot tell what difficulty the players are playing on from server logs; what’s the point recording stats when people could be playing on Easy while others play on Expert? Plus, I don’t care about Coop anyway.

The parser logs every unique player’s stats on our server, everything they say and kill and the weapons they use and so on. It measures how many players quit before the end of the campaign, incaps, deaths, kills, tongue attacks, leaps, long range leaps and successful pukes/booms. It also records the number of full maps each player has played and how many times they have survived the map, which gives a survival rating – this data is also used to measure how many survivors successfully escape in each map.

I compiled all of this for my own benefit (and for the people that use the server regularly) but I thought I’d share some of the interesting bits and statistics with you all. Please note this is a public server that is also used occasionally for organised 4v4 games; statistics will reflect mostly public server play, however.

In most cases each statistic will be displayed with the following format:

Stat Number (% of category) [Highest by one player]

I was quite surprised that's as little-used as it is. I never use it, mind.

Gotta dig those people using pain pills as their primary weapon.

Nice stats. Would be fun for those people who play on your server to see some names (I assume you can track name changes via SteamId or console noticed that players have changed names.

Are there any stats in console logs relating to damage dealt? I've noticed in my client logs that when I die there is a display of the damage I dealt/took and to/from whom.

As I said, I wrote it myself

It's actually only in VBA for Excel. I just coded it myself.

My stats already have this but it would be silly for me to post 3k+ player names here

I use steam ids to work out name changes and unique players.

Hehehe, of course. I was more thinking of naming, say, the best player (or top 3) for each infected type based upon average number of kills per game or something. But I suppose those sort of stats are unreliable indicators anyway, as one person could do most damage as a Boomer, then a Hunter comes along and finishes the survivor off, being tagged as the killer. So yeah, forget that idea anyway. =)

NM4 AND BH4 have a higher finish rate then even NM1? Wow, I didn't think they were THAT bad.

The % of fail boomers is also rather shocking. People suck.

Is there any way to add a time used per weapon section? From this information it is impossible to tell, for example, whether the Autoshotty gets about 60% more kills then the M16, or it gets the same average kills but is just used 60% more often. Combining this with other stats, such as how many hunters/boomers/smokers each weapon kills would be very interesting, since in VS. its killing the special infected that really matters. The regular infected kills, while interesting, isn't as important.

Some conclusions I'd draw from this

Blood harvest is vastly less popular, for some reason.

I personally find it a more enjoyable campaign on the whole, although the first and third maps of NM are my favorite.

The fourth maps on both campaigns are far too easy. The hospital has a higher survival rate than the apartments, what the hell ?

I'd say valve needs to do some work on these maps. The hospital is too small and cramped in general, and blood harvest 4 is just laughable because 80% of it is skippable, and you can just sprint straight through.

The autoshotgun is still overpowered, and everyone knows it. Also, the hunting rifle is a joke.

Most of the top 3 consists of us And all other players I doubt anyone would know who they are here.

I have done an average, per map and similar stat for all players though.

I intend to use the stats for top 10 awards, soon as I sort out the SQL on our site. I'll do monthly awards.
