FIX the stuttering with multicore rendering enabled (Nvidia cards with newer drivers)

Here's how to do that.

Download and install nHancer (a game profile manager that expands from the one in the drivers' control panel).
Pick the Left 4 Dead profile and, in the compatibility tab check "CPU Multi Core support" then select single core.
Below the games list mark the checkbox "Profile can be activated manually".
Now you can enable multicore rendering in the game but every time you want to play L4D you have to activate the profile manually (from the tools menu or from the tray icon) and deactivate it after exiting the game.
If you don't want to do that you can select single core in the global options and never bother enabling or disabling profiles, but driver multicore support will be disabled in other games you play.

Note for the sceptics: Doing this does give you a performance boost compared to having multicore rendering disabled ingame, because the nHancer option only affects the drivers and not the game.

Proof of performance increase with my fix:

Almost a 30 fps increase in parts of the game where I have the lowest performance, and I have zero stuttering with drivers 180+ thanks to this fix.

Also, incase you're wondering, the option "Threaded optimization" in the Nvidia control panel is not the same as the one I'm talking about in nHancer...

One more thing. There is a chance that this may fix the sound loop crashes affecting many people. Please try it and post your results.

Have been running with the latest nvidia beta drivers with multicore enabled on a 9800GTX+ for weeks with no stuttering problem. In fact no problems at all.

It's not Beta, this one is WHQL-Certified (Vista X64)

Didn't help for me. Driver 179.28 here.

I followed all the steps and it just does not work properly. If it does for you, cool, but not for everyone perhaps.

You mean you still have stuttering? What graphics card and CPU do you have?

I've got a Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 (2.0GHz) and a 9600M GT.
Yeah I'm on a laptop, but it was running outstanding before patch 1.0.0.8. Currently on driver 178.24.

It is a firmware issue most likely on older nvidia GPUs.
