Hijacked Account; L4D Specific HLSS Download the Culprit?

My account got Hijacked today, and the only thing I can think of is that damned link that was posted in the forums yesterday or the day before.

It was this:
<snip>

A L4D specific version of HLSS. It seemed to run like normal HLSS as far as I could tell.

Fast forward to today, and a message popped up while I was out to class that said "My account credentials have expired".

I would like to know if anyone else has looked at this and noticed anything fishy.

And, to make it known that I'm not a buffoon, I did not give my account information to ANYONE, the only way besides guessing the pw would have to be from a keylogger.

Also, on a related note, how long does it take for Valve to get back in touch with you to reinstate your account??

An addendum:

This computer has been recently formatted, and every unit of software that has been installed has been completely legit, until that "especial l4d HLSS"

Anyone have an idea about this program?

Funny thing is.. I'm listed as playing L4D right now, but I'm at work.

You need to submit an incident report to support right away. Don't waste time in this forum. If it is infact hijacked, the person could potentially be hacking on that account and it may get flagged for a VAC ban. Trust me, it happened to me. So don't wait. And in the meantime, upgrade your antivirus and do a full scan, etc. Support will probably suggest you reformat and reinstall.

And for God's sake, don't use the same password again when you get it back and make it something complicated.

That's the first thing I did, I opened a ticket with Valve. Just waiting on them to take action. How long did it take for you?

Scanning with Malware Bytes now.

Thank you for the advice.

I want to say it took 3 days for the whole process, but don't hold me to that. It was 2 years ago when it happened. I think they place priority on accounts being hijacked so it shouldn't take long. You'll also need to make sure you have your purchasing information so that they can confirm its really you.

If you don't have a full fledged antivirus software, and/or a bit strapped in the pocket book, I would suggest AVG. They have a free version that works well and is fairly fast. http://free.avg.com/

Erm, why would you use a L4D version of HLSS when regular HLSS works for L4D just fine? I'd suggest contacting Steam to retrieve your account if it's not too late. Also you might want to use a spyware, you can use 'superantispyware' they have a free trial and a free edition you can download.

Good luck getting your account back.

Can I point something out? You are contacting Steam, not Valve? Valve makes the game but it sounds like you're talking about your Steam account being hijacked.

Haha, yes, sorry for the confusion I am in fact contacting Steam with the support request. The hierarchy of company naming schemes at times confuses me.

And about the l4d HLSS, when displaying what .wav is selected, it would only appear for a fraction of a second, I naively thought maybe this would fix that problem.

Steam = software
Valve = company that makes said software.

I just went thru the same thing yesterday.
I was logged into Steam and cruising forums, came across a link to what I thought was a legit sound mod and downloaded it.It came thru my AVG(paid version not free)as virus free so tried uding it and BANG as soon as game tried to start I got a message that I was no longer connected to Steam.
Tried to re login but soon found out after trying to reset password that my account had been jacked.
Only took about a day and a half to get my account back.
THANK YOU STEAM SUPPORT
On the plus side of it the hat that did this was not very good at covering his tracks.I copied the file to disc along with the web address of the hosting service that it was uploaded to and a copy of the email I received from them stating that they have suspended their account and will cooperate fully with the police.
This dirtbag is going to get a nasty surprise soon when the boys in blue come knocking on his door.

I like to think this is your punishment for using HLSS.

A day and a half? That's not bad at all. Thank you for sharing the story of your vindication.

The result of the scan was a couple of backdoor trojans. Downloading Nod32 and will scan soon.

Thanks all for your help!

I've been playing Source games since hl2, never had the urge to use hlss until recently.

I saw someone post this on the forum and it's on the FPSBanana site. I thought it was fishy because like already stated, HLSS works fine with Left4Dead already. I would not be surprised if that is the culprit.

But I'm really here to bump this so more have a warning if this turns out to be true.
