I had this happen to me randomly... All I did was click the Cancel button to perm ignore and continue and it works fine... Not sure why it prompted me, though.

I think if you just perm ignore it, it might keep launching in compatibility mode. I'd suggest doing the registry edits above.

Thanks for the solution.

However, I had clicked on " cancel ", so Steam launched with the modified options, and it didn't do anything, everything was working as intended.

But still, thanks.

For some reason windows can automatically apply settings and after the event it can be very hard to remove but these settings are based on app install path so changing this should fix the issue.

Please note uninstalling steam removes your installed games so I would copy the steamapps folder then remove and paste it back into the new install location.

Hope this fixes your issue.

UPDATE: Take a look in the registry at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
You may notice steam.exe listed there. Removing that may help. Also check under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE as well in case its admin set.

Thanks it solve the annoying issue!

Nothing was working for me until I came across this post! Thank you!!

Stea/windowscomp mode problem

I have windows 7 64bit on my computer. Steam was running fine for me just yesterday and today when I try to open it a error message pops out;

" Running Steam in Windows compatibility mode is not recommended. Please remove any Windows compatibility settings for all users under file properties for Steam.exe and restart Steam. Press 'Cancel' to permanently ignore this warning and continue."

I've tried everything I could to fix this problem. I went to regedit and tried looking everywhere for steam.exe path, I've tried running as administrator, I've even tried the whole deletion of shortcuts of steam games. Nothing has worked. I don't know what else to do. Is there any way of getting it to work again?

Awesome. I love it when a quick regedit fixes what no amount of menu-hunting will fix!

Same was for me, just clicked Cancel and it worked, checked the properties of the Steam icon on my desktop, there were no Compatiblity Mode. So I think it was just a bug/an error.

Lightbulb another Solution

I deleted the Steam entry here in the registry:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers]

Then the Message "Running Steam in Windows compatibility mode is not recommended." was gone. Nothing else did work with Win7-x64.
My problem come up after playing "Hitman: Blood Money"
