perfect landscape detail?
I have a pretty new computer that can run almost any game on the highest possible settings. But in this game there is an option under landscape detail called "perfect" that is greyed out and I can't select it. How can I get perfect detail? Is it there just to tease me?

First of all make sure your running it in OpenGl mode.
go to the game directory and find a file called conf and open with note pad. Go to the bottom of the text document. [Render_OpenGL] TexQual=3 TexMipFilter=3 TexCompress=0 TexFlags.UseDither=1 TexFlags.UseAlpha=0 TexFlags.UseIndex=0 TexFlags.PolygonStipple=1 TexFlags.UseClampedSprites=0 TexFlags.DrawLandByTriangles=1 TexFlags.UseVertexArrays=1 TexFlags.DisableAPIExtensions=0 TexFlags.ARBMultitextureExt=1 TexFlags.TexEnvCombineExt=1 TexFlags.SecondaryColorExt=1 TexFlags.VertexArrayExt=1 TexFlags.ClipHintExt=0 TexFlags.UsePaletteExt=0 TexFlags.TexAnisotropicExt=1 TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1 TexFlags.TexEnvCombine4NV=1 TexFlags.TexEnvCombineDot3=1 TexFlags.DepthClampNV=1 TexFlags.SeparateSpecular=1 TexFlags.TextureShaderNV=1 HardwareShaders=1 Shadows=2 Specular=2 SpecularLight=2 DiffuseLight=2 DynamicalLights=1 MeshDetail=2 VisibilityDistance=3 Sky=2 Forest=3 LandShading=3 LandDetails=2 LandGeom=2 TexLarge=1 TexLandQual=3 TexLandLarge=1 VideoSetupId=17 Water=2 Effects=2 ForceShaders1x=0 That's the settings i've got on my setup for 'Perfect' mode and for the water settings if u have a shadermodel 3 Graphocs card it will give very fancy effects, especially in cloudly weather. |

OPenGL
How can I be sure to make IL-2 run in opengl mode? Or how can I determine in which mode does the game running? (Using steam version if it differs...)

Running this game in OpenGL on Vista32/64 is not only possible; it's your only choice with this game. Running this game in DirectX on my computer results in about 2 frames per second. (3 GHz Dual Core, 4 GB of RAM, 9600 GT 512 MB card.) Compare that to about 50-80 fps in max settings when running IL-2 Sturmovik in OpenGL
