Steam client skin that matches windows UI
It would be nice if the steam client might be made to have aero glass and standard looking vista/win 7 feel. Even if the in game overlay couldn't have it, or the buddy list. The main game window is the one element that interupts the look and feel of aero glass on both my win 7 and my vista computers. I know it's a minor thing but I might as well suggest it.

Sure you can download skins, and most of them look pretty good, but none of them can replace the aero style.

I'd also like to have an option for Steam to match other Windows windows.

I've been wondering about why Steam does't use the default Windows theme. I don't know a lot of these things myself, but I've heard that it uses more memory when programs use a custom appearance instead of the default one.

I think Steam would look awful with the default theme... Ugh.

And I think Steam would look 95% better if it used your current Windows theme. I've customized it the way I want because that's how I want it.

I see your point but I dont think the current theme or skins would do any worse in terms of performance than the default windows one. Also if you want some skins that match Windows check out THIS thread.
PS: It would be awesome if steam can utilize the Win7 jump list. |

Those skins do not match Windows, those skins match one particular person's Windows UI settings. That is not the same thing. We want native UI controls, even GTK on Windows is capable of that. Though I still wouldn't recommend GTK if you want it to look like a Windows program...

Yeah it is something that I've wanted for a while. Just nice to have everything consistent. Of course original Steam themes would be there for everyone else.

It may possibly be something to do with the overlay system / in game messages. The shiney effect would have to be removed when in game, that means changing the theme when you launch a game. I personally dont know how much would need to be changed in order for it to use your current windows theme. And for all we know they might have written their own window code so that the overlay works well and on every system.
I use the default skin, it doesnt really matter to me what it looks like. I think there are more important things to work on than the look of steam. Functionality should come before appearance. |

Nobody said anything about maintaining the Windows theme in the overlay, though I do believe it would be relatively easy through the DWM in Vista. But that's an unnecessary can of worms to open.
Widdit: I agree, the "Vista" Steam skins are terrifying. Last edited by amnesiasoft: 03-11-2009 at 01:31 PM. Reason: ninja'd by Widdit, no need for double posting. |
