Zeno Clash FAQ

Hi everyone. Welcome to the Steam Zeno Clash forums. Here is a compilation of the most frequently asked questions regarding the game.

The official Zeno Clash forums are at:
ACE Team Official Zeno Clash Forums

But we can see these forums generating a lot more traffic. Feel free to ask any questions as we will be roaming around these forums frequently.
  • 1) Q: When was Zeno Clash released?
A: April 21st 2009.

  • 2) Q: What is the game like? Is Zeno Clash an RPG? Does it have large explorable areas?
A: Zeno Clash is a fighting game mixed with a FPS. It is not a RPG and does not have huge explorable areas like Elderscrolls: Oblivion. (Remember this is an indie game...)

The gameplay is quite unlike other first person games. The game focuses heavily on melee combat and has a story oriented adventure. Players get to travel to unique and unusual locations and meet with strange characters from a completely alien world. The story is about Ghat who is son of an impressive hermaphrodite creature named Father-Mother. Ghat has a conflict with his family and will find himself a fugitive and escaping to the borders of the known world.

The weapons of the game include strange pistols and contraptions made of junk plus some bashing weapons to fight against heavyweight characters. The combat mechanics work so that fighting at a distance or with your fists is an option at all moments.

  • 3) Q: So, how long is the game?
A: The game lasts from 4-5 hours in the single player campaign. It also includes a unlockable Survival Mode with a ranking system to extend replayability.

  • 4) Q: Does the game have any other game modes? (Other than Singleplayer)
A: Yes. The game has a Challenge Mode. In the Chellenge Mode players are ranked against their friends in time and health categories. The objective is to survive a 'tower challenge' where each floor has a new set of adversaries. This feature is great for those who enjoy the combat and don't want to replay the SP campaign to be able to fight some more enemies.

  • 5) Q: How much does the game cost?
A: $15

  • 6) Q: Where will I be able to buy Zeno Clash?
A: Via Steam & Direct 2 Drive.

  • 7) Q: No retail version?
A: Noviy Disk is publishing in:
Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Estonia, Latvia Lithuania, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Kirghizia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan.

CDProjekt is publishing in:
Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary

  • 8) Q: Won't you have a retail version in other countries?
A: ACE Team is currently in the process of getting releases Japan with Zoo Corporation. Other areas of Europe and North America are under negotiations.

  • 9) Q: What about Zeno Clash for the consoles?
A: We have nothing concrete about any console version of the game, but it might happen.

  • 10) Q: What about Zeno Clash 2? Will it be another 'episode' or a new game?
A: Zeno Clash is not an episode. It does leave a few questions un-answered, but the main story and conflict of the game is resolved. We have not decided yet what we will do after Zeno Clash is released. We have interest in developing a sequel (and if possible a bigger game).

  • 11) Q: Is there a demo?
A: You can get the demo here

  • 12) Q: What languages does Zeno Clash support?
A: All audio is in english and we will support subtitles in english and spanish. We are working on adding more languages such as german french and russian, but this may be after launch.

  • 13) Q: Will this game have a censored version in certain countries? Does the game have a rating?
A: We are releasing a single worldwide build. The game does not have excessive gore as it is inadequate for both the story and style. Remember that Ghat (the protagonist) is in a conflict with Father-Mother and that he fights against his family. It would be out of character for him to mutilate his brothers and sisters. The game has violence in the form of up-close and in-your-face combat, but the violence isn't unnecessarily overdone.
The game has no rating but our perception is that it would probably be on the high end of 'Teen' games due to the fact that everything is in a world of fantasy and nothing like real looking guns are in the game. We cannot confirm that it wouldn't get a higher rating though...

  • 14) Q: What are the system requirements?
Minimum
o Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® XP / Vista / Vista64
o Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 3.0 GHz
o Memory: 1 GB RAM
o Hard Disk Space: At least 3 GB of free space

Another questions, will game use new features of Steamworks like online savegame (savegames stored online) system? And how many achievements will be available in game? And thanks for this innovative game, gamers need these games.

We will have steam cloud which will support unlocked chapters and we'll have around 20 achievements (still finishing last details on those)

Any plans, thoughts of possible DLC after release? A true multiplayer survival mode perhaps? Or new areas?

So many things to worry about before we think of creating DLC. We might... I don't know now. We still have to see about the game's reception, launch, the Independent Game's Festival at GDC...

Hopefully we'll be able to add some cool DLC later... but we don't have anything in the works right now.

Might be nice to know, especially for the German steam users: will some countries get a censored version (as most people don't like a censored version)?

The game doesn't have extreme gore... I doubt it would need to be censored. We aren't working on any censored build anyways.

What languages will be supported in audio? Only English and Spanish or also other languages like German or French?
Are there subtitels for not audio supported languages?
Will there be a preload for Pre-purchase customers?

We will only support english audio. But we will support many languages as subtitles, we will start with english and spanish and will add more as soon as we can (french, german, etc).

Is it a rail shooter? The pictures make it look like you only have control of attacks, and the character is moved for you, however I find it hard to believe this is the case.

Anyone able to confirm you freely control the character, or is its movement controlled for you?

- Dosen't matter anymore, decided to buy the game anyway, looks too good to pass up for full price, so I won't let 50% go to waste.

Since this uses the Source engine, any chance of being able to fiddle around with the game using the Source SDK?

Check out the videos. If it's a rail shooter, it looks very convincingly to not be a rail shooter.

We have made some big changes to the engine (exporter, compiler, hammer, etc), so we would have to release all of our tools, we can't assure anything yet...
