Counter-Strike 1.6 Beta
We have released a beta update for Counter-Strike 1.6.
You can access the beta by going to the Settings dialog in Steam, go to the Account tab and hit the "Change ..." button under the Beta section. Then select the "Counter-Strike 1.6 Beta" from the list. This beta is addressing some regressions with the recent game patch. Note that you can ONLY test this beta by using a listen server, testing on normal dedicated servers will NOT work and will produce invalid test results. So make sure you ONLY test by connecting to listen servers (i.e servers made by the "New Game" button in the games UI). The changes for the beta are: * Fixed all sound related glitches with the Russian walk / silent running fix (including standing still sound, repeat sound, and always default sound) We are interested in details of situations where you still get inappropriate jump or step noises in the game with this beta. Note that silent/Russian walking was an exploit and has been fix. ------------------- Beta update: 04/27/09 The beta has been updated with the following changes: * full duck jumping doesn't make any sound as before * walk jumping DOES still make a sound, but it's 65% quieter than a normal one. * movement penalty now happens after 2 or more successive incomplete duck movements, not the first. * the unduck penalty does not get applied after you've jumped - this caused the jumping penalty to be reduced. The reason 'walk jumping' still makes a sound is because there is no concrete way to determine if the user was actually walking for real, and not just pressing walk long enough for the sound to not play. The purpose of this sound at all, is to eliminate silent pogo bouncing. You may not go full speed when you do it, but if you time your jumps correctly you can pogo around the level silently at a slightly reduced speed, while this may not be critical, it's still something that shouldn't be happening, and was actually a side efect (bug) of another fix from years ago - the penalty for bouncing around. ------------------- Beta update: 05/04/09 - Rate limit fullupdate and some other commands to prevent command spamming - Fix status icons (buy zone, bomb zone, etc) disappearing when starting a recording, or issuing a fullupdate - Don't allow aliasing of existing cvar names - changed the behavior of the silent walk exploit; rapidly crouching/uncrouching(releasing before you’ve actually crouched) 2 times in a row, in a very shorttime will result in a delay before crouching again, but it will not slow you down. - potential fix for all “flashbugs” plus issues where any grenade dropped into certain locations would either choke the server, or crash it Note To get this beta you will need to opt out and then back into the Counter-Strike 1.6 beta using the settings dialog. If you do NOT do this you will not get the full beta update. ------------------- Beta update: 05/12/09 - Rolled back recent Russian walking exploit fixes as we investigate less impactful ways of preventing the bug - Fixed bomb bounding box, prevents silent plant exploit ------------------- Beta update: 05/13/09 - Slightly bigger c4 bounding box to fix other reported exploits - Removed some more newly added jump sounds Last edited by alfred : 05-13-2009 at 09:18 PM. Hi, thank you for doing this and listening to my/the community's requests. I just tested out the Beta and it seems pretty good so far, however there is one problem.
The fix you put in to stop crouch running or "russian" as you call it, also means when we crouch in a stationary position, and then try to run, we need to wait to be able to accellerate. Basically, it feels like for the first second or longer, we're actually walking when we try to run after crouching. |

Thank you! I've tried the beta for a few minutes now and the slow down seems fine. Takes some getting used to but it works well. You do make a sound when you walk and jump now, but you are still able to reach boxes without making a sound if you just stand still.
Ladders do not make sounds while crouching anymore. I would call this patch a success. Edit: I change my mind. The jump sound while walking ruins everything. Not a success... Last edited by urss : 04-24-2009 at 03:06 PM. |

This must be fixed Personally, I think the slowdown is too great. The slowdown is much greater than what you get from doing a jump. There's no reason for it to be greater than the jump slowdown (it just feels annoying. just stop the player and let the acceleration be the same as if you're just starting to walk. Slowing down the acceleration isn't needed to stop people from russian walking and it makes it feel like you're walking through syrup) Also, with this slowdown you've removed the ability to do crouchpeeks around corners (which isn't the same as russian walking). Really annoying |

Counter-Strike 1.6 Beta Bug List
This is the BUG List only. Do not post anything else except bugs and features that are unwanted in the beta.
Thanks for the beta Valve. A good sign to the rest of the community and this was a good effort. I hope you keep listening to us and try to incorporate these fixes into a patch. Just to remind you, crouch running is not that much of a problem anymore so feel free to revert to the cs 1.6 before the two major patches. |

somethings id like to point out on the update, when ur ducked.. like say under a train and soon as u get out from under and try to run it like makes u walk for abit same with when u first hit ur duck button, ur super slow, its not to good if u hit ur duck key for a sec and try to run when ur standing u cant... (oh yeah someone else pointed this out) you guys should of just make the russian walk sound like ur just running normal, its cake to shoot anyone doing it...

I really don't like the walking/crouching jump noise.. but its much better than b4.. also does anyone else feel like the jumping is way off?? particularly in bunny hopping.
All in all its better than it was, i really cant complain considering how close we were to having cs ruined by the jump noise. |

if you tap crouch 1 time we still get slowed down...its not right. it should be if you do it 2 times

These aren't bugs, but most likely features being tested. Slowing down while crouching prevents some run-crouch spamming that messes up the hitboxes. Jump sound while walking prevents some ninja actions like jumping 10 meters up by boxes without a single sound.
Both good features. |

Move it if you'd like. I was afraid that all of the various comments and such would make the thread hard to sort through if VALVe employees wanted to read about any bugs and such.
By the way, if you are running and press JUMP and in midair tap CROUCH, when you land you will glide along the ground with no loss of speed. If you repeat this movement you can move very quickly with minimal noise. I don't think this is a feature of the Beta. |

Here a small list of really important fixes :
1.) Remove the massive slowdown after using +duck. In every highlevel game you need to duck arround the corner since youre dead otherwise. You are also unable to duck and shoot ( accuracy goes up if you press +duck ) since this totally messes up the advantage you get while using +duck, 2.) Remove the Stepsound that happens after using +jump and +anydirection etc. Would be nice if you restore the 47 protocol :P |
