Steam Suggestions List

My small suggestions list:

Steam application
  • Font size changeable in Settings dialog.
  • Notification popup:
    • Corner can be changed
    • Time of notification appearing/fading/staying time
    • Number of notification that can appear on screen can be changed
Those settings are already editable via steamscheme.res file.
  • Server browser history and favorites hosted on SteamCloud
  • Ability to add server as valvesoftware.com:27015. Currently it's converted to IP and this IP is stored. Currently Steam doesn't check if IP has changed
  • Customizable message sounds
  • Saving non-Steam application shortcuts just after changes are made. Curently they are saved when you close Steam via File>Exit.
  • Option to send spare copies of games instead of overwriting them by new subscriptions
  • Option to shutdown PC after Steam finishes downloading game(s)
  • Download progress shown in percents as well as megabytes
  • Better compression level for Steam Backup function
  • Resolving issues with Steam backups on Vista/W7. Currently you have to copy contents of backup to your hard drive to make them function. Backups currently do not want to restore directly from CDs/DVDs.
  • Option to easily change color of Steam windows. Options to change it using sliders or RGB color.
  • Improving copying of URLs from Steam Community tab — marking URL and pressing Ctrl+C not always works
  • Integration of SteamCloud features for other Valve games
  • Adding a different icon when Steam synchronizes with SteamCloud. Pointed out here.
  • Option to view videos from GCF flies unless you want to use other media player (Saving HDD space as they are located on the disk twice [once in a gcf and second time extracted in Steamapps/Media)
  • Improving voice chat quality.
  • Adding a tickbox to server browser that would hide games that you don't have installed from filters
  • Place where you could review old issues of EJ corner a.k.a weekly news(separate from one on forums)
  • Steam blog!
  • Steam friends app for iPhones and other mobile devices
  • (When Windows 7 comes out) Integrate Steam with Windows taskbar
  • Button to fix Steam:// protocol(Write keys into registry again)
  • Option to put servers on black list
  • Options for backups to include custom content (skins, maps, savegames...) And when you are restoring them from backup you can choose if you want to restore custom content or not
  • Launching a non-steam game which requires UAC elevation will show UAC dialog and/or launch the game, as opposed to just failing.
  • Allow user to whitelist content servers, which will allow them to connect to unmetered servers.
  • Adding an option to join group chat(s) at startup
  • G-15 keyboard chat display (or any type of LCD support, or plugin for LCDstudio)
  • Option to set priority to downloads

Steam Community
  • Searchable members list in groups
  • Ban list paged and searchable
  • Button to restore default avatar
  • Counting overall gameplay hours
  • Showing total time spent in all of games
  • Displaying hours hours spent in non-Steam games. One position for non-Steam games on gameplay stats would be fine.
  • More levels for group moderating. Currently there is only one. With ability to create multiple levels for moderating you could give someone ability to kick from chat but not post announcements. You could create another moderating group that could post announcements but not kick from chat and so on.
  • Ability to post screenshots on Steam Community profiles
  • Searchable friends list, option to sort it alphabetically
  • Small personal notepad on your Steam Community control panel
  • Steam Community stats page that could contain:
    • Achievements stats — number of achievers, percentage, rarest achievements and so on
    • Number of comments on SC pages overall as well as in this week
    • Number of blocks that were given to other users
    • Number of people that are currently in chats (Time graph would be nice)
    • Number of friends relationships
    • 10 most popular games
    • Integrating already released stats from currently existing stats pages
    • And so on
  • Option to detect and edit your hardware info than post it on your SC page. Ability to check with game requirements listed in Store would be nice as well
  • Clans, Clantags that would be added automatically when you join a game. You could participate in multiple clans and game would check which/if clan you belong to for this game and according to it it would change your name in game(partially implemented)
  • Ability to sort groups on your SC profile. Something that will allow us to sort groups in order that we want them to appear, especially 3 groups displayed on SC profile
  • Option to chat without using Steam client — via Steam Community profile
  • Announcements for planned downtime
  • SC groups events can be set to be repeatable
  • Achievements can be re-earned (description)
  • Restricting blocked users from commenting on your profile
  • Option for group announcements to be visible only to group members
  • Ability to view blocked (ignored) users via your Steam Community control panel
  • Add ability to add events for third-party MODs or games that you haven't purchased
  • RSS feeds for:
    • Announcements in a group
    • Upcoming Events for groups
    • Comments on a group's main page
    • Group History blotter
  • Option to link game servers with groups. It would be great to see status of those servers (players/map/gamemode etc.)
  • Optional small message when adding friends, sort of an invitation note.

Friends
  • Ability to check game progress in single player games by right clicking and picking "View game info
  • Custom statuses
  • Ban reasons for chat room bans
  • Timestamps settings saved in chat rooms
  • Chatlogs
  • Anti-spam feature for chat rooms as well as ability to ban someone from chat who just left
  • Option to ban offenders from public groups
  • Offline messages
  • Groups on friends list which would allow us to sort friends.
  • Searchable friends list
  • Custom aliases for friends (Option to rename persons on friends list)
  • Chat lobbies that would allow to join server as whole group for ALL Valve games. Similar to XBL parties.
  • Removing language box from chats(Image)
  • Option to create shortcut to chat on desktop (Steam:// protocol)
  • Steam giving error box if you don't have sufficient privileges to invite someone to a group
  • Restore games that you can play via friends
  • Fixing unclickable links on chat(Send me a PM, I'll explain)
  • Tabs in chats that would enable us to keep multiple conversations in a single window
  • Muting other users on voice chat in community groups chats

Overlay
  • Overlay can be disabled/enabled on game basis
  • Clock in overlay
  • Small notepad in overlay (Linked with one on your SC page)
  • Taking screenshots of the game that you are currently playing. Option to upload them and show on your SC profile would be a great thing.
  • Recording videos from games that you are currently playing
  • Ability to create addons for overlay, which would add new functions and options to the overlay.
  • Media player in overlay

Stores
  • Wishlist for Store
  • More soundtracks for games
  • More items from Valve games — stuff like "#1 Sniper" cup, action figures and so on.
  • Gift cards/Vouchers
  • Section with current discounts
  • HDD requirements on Store pages
  • Add RSS feeds for news/updates for a particular game, eg. one RSS feed for HL2, another for TF2, a third for CS and so on.
  • Updating Steam tour

Misc
  • More skins for forums

Something missing? Any suggestions? Feel free to send me a PM or contact via Friends.

Option to block people from contacting you from going to their Community Page. Option to block someone when you remove them from your friends list. Option to look at blocked people via "My Control Panel". Blocked Community members are unable to contact you in any way shape or form including comments. People shouldn't have to use the privacy options to block comments from people. I should be allowed to block them and have them be blocked indefinitely on all aspects of the community. Fixing the disconnected from internet on routers with small connection limits when refreshing steam browser. Allow us to save our filters in server browser so those of us who have inadequate routers do not get disconnected when bringing up the server browser window.

Small notepad in overlay *Associated with the game currently being played and stored in it's folder* not just one notepad for all (98 games info on 1 notepad would suck)

Being able to highlight text in the notepad and copy or send to console would be awesome.

Post My additions.

Steam Client
  • Better defragmentation of GCFs (at least on par with HLLib)
  • Options for backups to include custom content (skins, maps, savegames...)
  • Launching a non-steam game which requires UAC elevation will show UAC dialog and/or launch the game, as opposed to just failing.
  • Report correct download size and speed in Steam Bandwidth Monitor
  • Notify user of download size of game in installation wizard
  • Allow user to whitelist content servers, such as only connecting to 3FL Content Servers (for Westnet/iiNet users)
  • Add jumplist and show download progress bar in Superbar icon (Windows 7)
  • Add Aero Skin or Aero Support for third-party skin developers
  • Fix downloads resuming on game launch and/or map change
  • (EDIT) Fix restoring Steam Backups on slow or shaped internet connections crashing the steam client.

Steam Games
  • Integrate with Windows Game Explorer

Steam Store
  • Show download size on application page
  • Add RSS feeds for news/updates for a particular game, eg. one RSS feed for HL2, another for TF2, a third for CS and so on.

Steam Overlay
  • Increase compatibility so it can be run alongside apps such as EVGA Precision OSD
  • Increase compatibility with non-steam games, such as the EA Link version of Battlefield 2142

Steam Community
  • Chat SDK/API for people to make chat apps (less secure), or
  • Official Steam Chat Application for iPhone, JavaME, Windows (portable), or just web-based chat
  • Add ability to add events for third-party MODs.
  • Ability to block a players avatar being shown to you.

Steam Security
  • Changing a user's contact email
Upon submittal of a change of email address request, an email will be sent to the user's current contact email address, with 2 links.
    • The first link will redirect to the Steampowered site and will change the contact email address immediately.
    • The second link will cancel the change request.
    • If neither link is clicked within 7 days the change is processed automatically and the contact email is changed.
This is for users who for some reason or another cannot access their old email address, while still preventing "hackers" and phishers, as 7 days should be sufficient to reclaim a hijacked account.

  • Changing your Password
This system is identical to the email changing system (as detailed above), except changes are rolled over within 24 hours.

Until the password or contact email is actually changed, through either the waiting period or the link in the email, the user will not be able to connect to VAC-secured servers to prevent hijacked accounts being VAC-banned.

When the user cancels the change they will be presented with the option to disable their account until after the user has reclaimed their account; either through Steam Support or by changing the password themselves. Upon successful login the user will be asked for an activation code to reactivate their account, which will be sent to their current contact email address. Should the contact email-address be changed through either the waiting period or link in the email, the activation code will be resent to the new address.
  • In the event of 3 incorrect logins within 10 minutes, users are locked out of their account until they unlock it via a link in an email sent to them. This will help combat bruteforce cracking.

Here's my suggestion. That before anyone can post to the "Suggestions/Ideas" forum a popup appears that states the following:

"Before you make your crazy suggestion please remember that Steam is a program that runs in the background while you are trying to play your game. We at Valve thought it would be a wonderful idea to create a program that uses up your computer's valuable resources at the same time that you want to use them to (a) increase your resolution (b) increase texture detail (c) increase those snazzy death animations; or (d) all of the above. So please remember that every time a new Steam feature is added that means that a bit more computing power will be needed to keep Steam and all those clever little features you thought up running and a bit less computing power will be available for your game."

Wow(!), that's like the ultimate suggestion list of suggestion lists. I'm not even going to bother articulating my thoughts and just say yes to everything you mentioned. They're all great additions, and hopefully Steam will get around to using some of them.

+rep, not like you need any more of it.

Thank you for that reference Mangr0v3. It means that I am just as entitled as anyone else to post MY suggestion which is what I did.

Hmm.. Lets add make it all optional so those that like it the way it used to be can't whinge and moan.

Just imagine if no improvements were made that required more pc grunt, we would be dicussing the possible improvements to pong on the commodore 64... or worse... argh I hate the people that refuse to look 24 hours into the future.

When I first used steam it used hardly any ram, now it uses 20 to 40 meg (personal observations), but I had 256 meg of ram when I started using steam and now I have 8 gig. By the time these features are added I will probably have 16 or 32 gig of ram.

Mangr0v3, I added some of your suggestions to main list, some things like bandwidth monitor are already fixed and waiting for a release. Would you mind explaining what is wrong with defragmenting files via Steam? It uses both methods since July 2008.

but very inefficiently. Steam's GCF defragmenter barely makes a difference. HLLib's GCF defragmenter fully defrags it internally.
