Golden Pocket Watch - Feign Death

This isn't a "omg look what I found" post. It's more of a compilation of the seperate posts done so far.

Take a look at the sniper update page.

Pay close attention to what the spy is holding in his hand. It's a small, yellow object. The inside is whiter than its edges.

Looks like this?

Here's an enlarged picture from another post. You can make out a tiny bit of a circle near the top, on one of the spy's fingers.

And from this post, we learn that the following code was found within TF2's code.
Quote:
_Time_that_feign_death_buffs_last
_tf_feign_death_duration
_tf_feign_death_damage_scale
_m_bFeignDeathReady
Finally, we have multiple and seperate instances where the silhouette of a spy can be seen behind the sniper. This indicated the spy was still alive somehow. (SOURCE)

In other words, this is probably what we can expect when the spy update rolls around, whenever it is.

Pocket Watch
  • Allows the spy to feign death.
  • Disables invisibility cloak.

There's also a few other implications.

Quote:
_Time_that_feign_death_buffs_last
Notice the term "buffs". In TF2, buff implies overheal. However, other features that can be described as buffs include: Ubercharge, Kritzkrieg, First Blood crits, KGB crits, and BONK! invincibility. If we exclude the crits, as critting while feigning death does not make much sense.

Quote:
_tf_feign_death_duration
The spy cloak has a similar cvar. It controlled how long the spy could remain cloaked for. We can assume this works the same way for the feign death.

Quote:
_tf_feign_death_damage_scale
Here's another interesting bit of code. It implies damage done to a spy feigning death could be higher or lower. As spies are one of the weakest classes in terms of damage taking, we'll assume this will be set to less than one and lower the damage taken.

Quote:
_m_bFeignDeathReady
There's a bit of the mystery with the code here. In the console, any variable with the prefix "m_" implies it has something to do with the mouse. It's more likely the M and B is some sort of acronym. For example, "Minutes_Before_FeignDeathReady".
No matter what, this would be the variable responsible for setting the time between feign deaths. In other words, the spy will not be able to use a half-charged "feign meter".

So what can we expect from the stopwatch?
  • The ability for the spy to feign death.
    • While feigned, the spy will be able to take more hits than usual.
    • Possible Health buff
    • Possible temporary invulnerability during the beginning.
    • Reduced damage taken.
    • A cooldown between each feign.
  • Invisibility cloak weakened.
    • Length reduced or possibly removed altogether.

EDIT1:Someone just pointed out to me that the pictures of the uncloaking spies meant the spy was able to cloak after feigning. Reworded some parts.

Just to clarify something for me (nice post overall.) the "lack of cloak" you're listing is pretty much an assumption, correct?

All seems to fit into place.

Although, i remember from ages and ages ago that valve said Feign Death was simply impossible to implement due to the way ragdolls worked in HL2?

Perhaps we are seeing some kind of creative work around?

The Lack of Cloak assumption comes from the fact that this Pocket Watch would replace the Wrist Watch (we already know by looking at the spy inventory page that the three items he will get as unlocakbles will be revolver, knife, wrist watch)

I hope its not a feign death, that seems pretty... useless.

Come on, Phase Shift!

A pretty useful ability in TFC, I must admit.

Nah, there are even server mods for this and Zeno Clash has shown that you can even animate standing up from just about any position in Source like in UT3.

Also Spy becomes useless without cloak unless another unlock adds something completely new.

Correct, although there is a high amount of evidence that it's true. (Considering the name of the watch you're replacing is "Invisibility Stopwatch" or something like that)

I don't see how valve could have a problem implementing a workaround. Heck, here's one right now:

Spy activates stopwatch.
Spy becomes invisible and is able to be passed through.
Spy enters a pseudo-deathcam mode.
A ragdoll is placed where the spy died.
The ragdoll is the only target the spy is able to look at for the remainder of the deathcam mode.
Once the spy stops feigning, the ragdoll disappears and the spy is returned to his position.

just wanted to add...

it seems misleading to show a cloaked spy behind the sniper if this 'pocket watch' disables your cloak.

not saying your idea is wrong, however. just something i was thinking

Hopefully not, because Valve must know that people mod servers to get rid of ragdolls.. I'm hoping for say a ghost ability where you pass through other people in exchange for, you guessed it, Cloak..

Nice thread though.. +1.

This is actually a very good point. I completely forgot the fact that the spy was half cloaked. It's possible that the cloak will remain, but its duration would be much lower.

As someone who is currently playing TFC as a spy, I am absolutely appalled with feign death. It pales in comparasion to cloak in every way shape and form.
