For people getting 3-5 second freezes when killing.

Rather than going on about why, but every time you make a kill or earn something the game makes a connection with the IP 216.98.48.18 on Port 80, which is presumably some Ubisoft server. It makes absolutely no sense why it would do this, but that's where your random freezing is coming from.

If you run the game perfectly and exceed the recommended specs, yet have freezing at certain points, this is your problem. I imagine a lot of people will be buying the game since it's $10 for a week, so I figured I'd make this thread. I was going nuts wondering what the hell was going on. Some grueling googling brought up this: http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-gaming...orkaround.html

The solution? For now just disable your internet or unplug whatever wire you have running into your rig (USB, Ethernet, hopefully not phone wire). It worked for me. No more annoying freezes that made the game unplayable. If anyone can come up with a better solution involving a firewall that would block the .exe from dialing out to that IP, by all means please share. I just spent enough time finding out what the problem was, so I'm going to go play for now!

my thoughts exactly. thanks for pointing out a ridiculous problem. I love ubisoft games but their piracy protection is infuriating.

This is strange. I didn't have this problem when I bought the game Saturday. Now all of a sudden it happened today. I thought it was my Vista update that did it.

When I first ran Assassin's Creed, my firewall said it was trying to access the internet. I just told it to block the program and all future attempts, which is basically the same as cutting off the internet for just that one game :P

Thanks a lot man! This is such a weird issue, I'll just have my firewall block the game.

I tried Windows Firewall and that didn't work. Then I read the hexus.net post and it said to not use Windows Firewall. D'oh. So does anyone have any suggestions of a good firewall that isn't obtrusive? I'm going to try ZoneAlarm, just because it's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

Ugh, Zone Alarm doesn't like Windows 7. Hooray. Looks like I'll just have to disable my wireless card until a proper fix comes out (which I doubt will happen)

I too am having problems but it only started today. I have a feeling it's a steam problem, since there were no updates released from microsoft (for vista anyway) and today the forums are filled with problems???

I had 15 hours of playtime with no problem at all, but since today I'm getting freezes when ever I stealth kill.

very strange problem.

This problem just started for me today also. I've had the game for several months and it's never done this before. Also, I have the retail version - so it's not just a steam thing.

I can confirm that unplugging from the internet fixes the freezing. Kind of annoying but at least there's a solution. What a strange bug...

Unhappy

Yeah, I also had/have the same problem. The stranger thing is, after I bought the game this past weekend, the game ran smooth as butter until yesterday... that's when it would start freezing right before a kill/stealth kill and locking onto the enemy. Very very weird. Any word from Valve on this?

I just go to device manager and disable my wifi card in order to play. Then it returns to normal.

Well that is interesting if it's not just a steam problem. Would the problem being Ubisoft's servers not syncing up properly with the game?
