Change the console button...
Change the console button for source games... in most of the keyboards of the world there is no ~.

I've never used a keyboard that was lacking the ~ button. Almost every game uses that key for console as well, probably because of Quake.
You can change the key yourself by opening up the relevant config.cfg (or adding it to your autoexec.cfg) and changing this line: Quote:

I have never seen a keyboard in my life without a "~" key.

Italian ones don't have it -.-'
And I'm not happy about our layout nonetheless... On most keybs layout the ~ key cannot be reached without using alt-gr commands. However I don't know if this combination can be used to start the console. In fact in some quake-derived Open Source games the key you use for console here in Italy is "\", that is the upper-left corner of the keyboard (the same key of the "`" and "~" key in the USA keyb. I don't know how they do it, it's just like if they try to get the key instead of the character. |

Console is on the upper left button on that keyboard. Always has been in HL series game. Or at least for me.
The one to the left of Nr 1 key. |

Nordic keyboards don't have the same button, and cannot produce that sign without shift and alt or other modifiers, which won't work in source games.
It works in the Hl1 engine, but if you try the same in source, you'll have no luck. |

Team Fortress 2, Portal, HL2:Ep2 and maybe DoD:S (not 100% sure, but I'd assume so, because it's also on the Orange Box engine) actually lets you set the console key in the keyboard options. It'd be really great if Valve went back and added that to the older Source games. For some reason Left 4 Dead went back to not having that option.
Personally, I got around it by binding the console to F12 in one of the config files. That might help a bit. |

They should simply make compatible for non-English keyboards. HL1 works so...

I was gonna make a new thread, but since Steam forum rules seem to say it's always better to bump an old one, I'll do just that.
For me the key down from Esc is §. Shift + § produces ˝. ~ is made by holding down Alt Gr+¨ None the less the § key usually works as the console key in most games for me, but not on Valve's games for some reason. It doesn't bother me much as adding -console to the launch options and then binding toggleconsole to an another key works, but it's still something I'd like to see get fixed for the future.
