FIX for *SOME* startup crashes

If you just want the fix, scroll down. This may also work with desktops, read the first response from Cidolfas.

A LOT of laptop users are reporting crashes on starting the game up. I am one of them.

What happened is I have a screen I use at home (hooked up to my laptop) that is 1080p. However, my laptop is only 1440x900.

I played the game at home, setting the resolution to 1080p. Upon trying to play later (away from home) the game wouldn't start. After reinstalling, I decided that it must be because of the resolution differences.

Unfortunately, I couldn't change the resolution without opening the game, and the game does NOT default to a lower resolution if it fails to start... kind of shoddy, I'd expect a patch soon. There's no external config program. So after digging around for a while, I found the config file!

Here's the fix:

Find the settings.ini file. It's located:

Windows XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\LucasArts\The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition\

Vista: (And maybe 7, not sure, don't have 7)
C:\Users\<User/PC name>\AppData\Roaming\LucasArts\The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition\
For Vista, you'll need to make sure hidden folders are shown. Google it.

Edit that with notepad. You should see the following:

Code:
[localization]
language=0
[display]
windowed=0
shaders=1
resolution=1440x900
[audio]
music=100
voice=100
sfx=100
subtitles=1
Change the resolution= to read whatever you need it to. If you're unsure of your max resolution, just change it to:

resolution=640x480

Then launch the game and change the resolution in the options to whatever you want.

Enjoy!

Thanks man, that worked great. I was trying everything and had exactly the same problem - it was working while my laptop was plugged into the docking station but not when I worked mobile. What kind of programming style is that? Why don't they check the resolution at every start?! Just imagine all these people who are not reading this forum.
This topic should be made sticky!

Not needed, you can just type it into the address bar.

open notepad, then copy this into it:

[localization]
language=0
[display]
windowed=1
shaders=1
resolution=640x480
[audio]
music=0
voice=0
sfx=0
subtitles=1

then save as "Settings.ini"

go to the search in the windiows start menu and type appdata and you should find that folder, in there you will fint either the lucasarts folder or the roaming folder, if you find the lucasarts folder in that yoy will fin secret of monkey island folder if you find roaming in that will be lucasarts and in that will be secret of monkey island save in the secret of monkey island folder.

appdata is a hidden folder you may need to look online to show hiiden folders, but if you click on the bottom left windows start button, and in the search bar search for appdata it should come up, otherwise i dont know what to do, doing this find the folder for me.
