This is the response they gave me:

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

The 64-bit version of this game is no longer available.

Please do the following to return to the chapter where you left off:

Open the console with the ~ key, type sv_cheats 1, press enter, and then type sv_unlockedchapters 15.

Start a new game and select the correct chapter.

When you are back to your saved location, re-open the console and type sv_cheats 0.

If you have any further questions, please let us know - we will be happy to assist you.

So did they remove HL2 64-bit? FINALLY!
Too bad about the save games though.

I was just about to post this since I have done so in the past (not due to any fault of Valve though). It will enable you to start off from where you were.

You know, it's funny, but the day before this happened I was having all kinds of crashes running HL2. Never had any problems before that, so thought it was real strange. I'm wondering if they broke something in 64 bit mode that caused the crashing, so the next day they just shut it off completely?

Unlocking chapters will get you to the start of a section, but journeying through Ravenholm is a bit of work that I didn't really want to repeat. If you can figure out the exact level, you can load the level via console without bothering with cheats or starting a new game. This will put you a lot closer. Only works if you know how to find the actual level name. In my case, I looked at the console after starting a new game at the beginning of Ravenholm and noticed that it had loaded d1_town_01. So you type in the console:

changelevel d1_town

and it will show you a dropdown list of all seven ravenholm levels. I chose d1_town_04 and it was close enough to where I had been the day before.

Well at least we finally know!

This is the point I was trying to make about Valve customer service. This info should have been in the Steam news. Someone should not have had to send a support ticket on it. Very bad customer service/communication.

I don't understand how a company that can make such great games, has solved every game problem I've personally had with their products to my satisfaction, can be so poor at communicating to it's customers. This is the same type of thing that got them in Dutch over L4F2, very poor communication skills. No info/media on games not out yet is one thing, but not communicating to us about major changes in those already out is totally unacceptable and jarate poor.

I don't understand their need to remove it. It doesn't work for some people so you screw over everybody? I don't think I'll be buying anymore Ubiso... er I mean Valve games anymore. So much for episode 3, it's gonna be another Duke Nukem Forever at this rate anyway.

It's not just poor CS, it's poor logical reasoning.

How's it going to be another Duke Nukem Forever? It's only been a few years, and the gap between Half Life and Half Life 2 was what, six? Sure, Episode 3 is supposedly shorter than a full game, but think about it, it's supposed to be the finale to the Half Life 2 arc. They want to make it absolutely brilliant before release, and they have a habit of not showing much Half Life info because of Half Life 2's incidents and mistaken announcements. Think before you randomly say things.

You know what's going to really tick me off? When 64-bit mode gets fixed and put back in the game. My new, three-levels-farther save in 32-bit mode will mean nothing.

It's not random, most games don't take 2+ years for an expansion pack. The technology behind the game is dated now, it was dated when Ep. 2 came out and it had to fight along side Bioshock which was superior to the HL2 expansions. Guess what, your not the smartest person on the planet, how about you practice what you preach and think before you say things.

Don't worry, we will probably never see it again. There is no reason to 'remove' 64-bit to fix it. Development doesn't work that way. You just fix it and patch it. The only reason to remove it is

a) It prevents the game from running at all (clearly not the case because of the 32 bit switch)
b) You want to remove it permanently.
Edit to add:
c) You messed up and removed it accidentally (still a possibility because support techs don't always know everything and tend to make things up)

Yeah according to the customer support message that ook got... I highly doubt it will return..

Im still getting annoyed though about games...64bit has been out for ages even 64bit operating systems...yet they still wont make any 64bit games.. I would like to utilize the 6-8gigs of ram I have without having to run a 3D modeling program or something.. so removing it seems a lazy move since they could have patched it..

64-Bit HL2 ran better than the 32bit one..on my systems anyway...went through 3 computers with the same 64bit OS and with windows 7 64bit... it ran perfect every time..

They may replace it with a better optimized 64bit version. Valve will have to switch to 64 bit one day and that was their first attempt. As I said when it ran, it ran well except for the excessively long load screens even for Valve. Did the 64 bit ship originally with the game or was it added later to the game? I ask this because I've only had a 64bit OS since the Win7 public beta started and so don't know. I only played the 32 bit version until then.

I have had 64bit Vista since the first day the OS came out pretty much,it was a free upgrade when I bought WinXP MCE 2005...its SP 0..lol

Since I first bought HL2 through steam its been 64bit(I have had steam since the first day also..lol)...I first got the AI bug..then I didnt get it anymore...and it ran fine after that...I was kind of annoyed that the rest of the episodes weren't 64bit..

No warning? Require your customers to contact support and then tell them to just use a cheater mode to start naked /near/ your last save point. Couldn't spend fifteen minutes to build a save game converter?
Well.. I guess I know what Steam thinks of /this/ customer, and I respond in like with a big YOU TOO.

Asinine.

A converter of some kind would have been neat.. As this really wiped all the saved games. A little heads up before upgrading would have been nice. This did not affect Ep1 and Ep2 for me wich I am greatfull for..
