Well, I just bought most of the parts for a new computer. It's an AM3 system with a Phenom II X3 720. My dad just gave me quite a bit of money to buy the rest of the parts for my computer. It's enough money to get the memory, hard drive, and graphics card that I need to finish it. Now, should I buy the 5850? I've never been on the bleeding edge of graphics before, and I think that buying such a card will pretty much make it so I won't have to buy another for quite some time. I'm afraid of some kind of bottleneck, though. I know there will be some, but will it be enough for me to warrant not getting a 5850? Thanks!

Most games are more gpu bound than cpu, so although their will technically be a bottleneck the 5850 will still be a great choice because you get directx 11 and its just an awesome card. And you can always upgrade your cpu in the future. That cpu is a good gaming cpu and is also very overclockable becuase its a black edition.

Yeah, the 5850 will chew up most game at max setting + AA, and spit awesome framerates. That CPU is good enough for many games so I'd not worry about a CPU bottleneck, with THAT much GPU power, you can always up res and ingame setting w/o much of a FR hit. Go for it!

I have the cpu. What case do you have? do you have an aftermarket cooler? if you do you can easily oc it to 3.6. I got mine to 3.6 with just 1.36 voltage. I even got to 4.0 with 1.55V but that was for giggles. At 3.6 My temps are 27 and on load is 37 Which is neat for a cpu!

In my neck of the wood, HD5850's from Sapphire and PowerColor will be widely available from tomorrow onwards. It's gonna be a rockin' good time for most vid card upgraders!

Really? Your dear 8800GT can't even do 2 FPS in Crysis at 2500x1600. http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/HD_5850/10.html

Yes totally untrue. While NVIDIA is working on something new, ATI/AMD have a crap load of plans in the works, besides just a DX11 ready 58xx series video cards, they're hard at work on technology advances like VISION and FUSION, which may not seem like much now just by viewing what's available so far on their website, but more is coming and SOON!
I don't really care for either company, I stay pretty neutral and just buy what works good hands down. At any given time you're about to upgrade, who knows this month the good card might be ATI, next month NVIDIA, and so on, back and forth. While it did take ATI some time to get CrossFire out to the market and give NVIDIA's SLI some competition, it's just as good/equal of a setup as SLI. Not to mention, if you're on a budget, the sub-$100 cards are full of powerful ATI cards. So there is a wide-range of options out there for everyone. It all depends what you're in the market for and can afford... all those NVIDIA-users out there were like hey wait, why do people who play STALKER have to use ATI card to get DX10.1, well because NVIDIA waited for DX11. And while NVIDIA is still behind and have yet to produce either a DX10.1 or DX11 card, it's in the works. So what if they're a little behind (like ATI was with CrossFire), it'll get here... .
