Red Orchestra vs. Day of Defeat Source
I'm looking for a good WW2 game and I wanted to know what this game is like. I am a DoD - DoD:S player and I find the latter somewhat "arcadish" and not as realistic as I would like. I was wondering for you Red Orchestra players which game you like better and why?
Thanks |

If it's a more realistic game you're looking for and the game you were previously playing is DoD:S, then Red Orchestra may blow you away in the realism department.
While a realistic game, it's not really overwhelmingly realistic (Just much, much more so than DoD). If there's a free weekend of it coming up anytime soon, I would wait for that to try it out. It's not exactly for everyone. If you do decide to get it then I strongly suggest downloading the Darkest Hour mod for it as well. Adds some nice features along with the ability to play American's, Canadians and Brit's. As for other WWII games. If you're looking for a seriously realistic one, there's a mod for the source engine (It's in the process of being ported to Orange Box and is in Alpha) that is designed to be extremely realistic (No crosshairs, hit indicators, kill messages, grenade warnings, grenade assistance... You get my point). Resistance and Liberation It's a bit of a small community (Due to it's early stage) but is very much playable and very fun. Anyway, hope this helps your decision. |

The thread on the DodS forums is way more active, I suggest you check that out.

I have DoD but never play it because it is very unrealistic compared to RO. If you want realism then RO is a much better game.

Red orchestra has a slower pace, can be good fun if you have friends you can communicate and work with. But if you're looking for pickup play, DOD:S has quite a few more public servers available with active players.
They both have their merits, I prefer Red Orchestra personally. |

Red Orchestra take much more skill and tactics. I chose it over any other WW2 FPS.

Between DOD:S and RO I would chose RO because of many factors:
RO does have Infantry only maps. Long range shots require skill of shooting ahead of the target due to bullets speed and drop. Choice of Semi-Auto or bolt action sniper rifles. Lots of weapon selections(all thats missing imo is the Nagant revolver, C96, PTRS semi auto, Panzershreck, Anti tank grenades). A great WWII feeling in the game. Great selection of tanks(although the addition of the SU100, SU85, KingTiger, JagdTiger, JagdPanther would make it feel more complete). |

Last time I tried it seemed buggy so I uninstalled it, I'll give it another try and see how it goes. |

The newest version really improved it. Official maps still aren't good though, but theres a lot of really good custom maps now, so it's not a problem anymore.
