I also have the G72GX and when I first got it and downloaded Steam, everything worked great. Then, like two days later, I played a game on Steam in the morning and when I came back inn the afternoon to play one it would freeze. So in 4 hrs I went from running perfect to locking up my system.
I have tried reinstalling steam like 5 times with and without the antivirus, which is not AVG. I'm at a loss |

Most likely since you own an Asus Laptop that is similar to mine, its just another load of bloatware that Asus added so they could put another sticker on your laptop.
Rest assured you don't actually have any creative audio hardware, its just software emulation that really doesnt have any affect with the lack of hardware. You won't miss anything. Glad your problem was fixed though. I went through days of troubleshooting to figure this out, and I knew why it worked because booting in safe mode allowed steam to start (safe mode included no audio). |

99% sure the same problem is on the new Asus G73, I had steam installed for about 2 days I was about 60% done downloading like 8 games and suddenly today it would lock up my system every time I start steam.
After hardbooting about 8x I started to get this error message - https://support.steampowered.com/kb_...3093-MKUJ-5773 So I tried that fix, and did it 3x over and it would rebuild the file and then when it was about to start steam it would freeze. I figured that it had to be some kind of corrupted download and I would have to delete all my stuff and start over. A fellow forum member told me he has many times just transferred his local files from his desktop to the laptop with no problems so he did not have to download everything again, so that is what I did. So now with full non corrupted in any way downloads it... still freezes. Now another forum member told me about this issue with the creative software and sure enough I know my system has it, I was messing with it just the other day (maybe what prompted the change that now makes it freeze, I turned on the bass boost) So I have not tried to uninstall it yet but I am most confident its the problem, I do hope we can find a fix, the sub woofer int he G73 kinda goes to waist without the bass boost enabled that the creative software has. |

Is everyone using an ASUS computer now? Perhaps it truly is that load of bloatware that Creative installed, you should tell Creative about that and let them fix it first.

I fixed the problem. I did not have to uninstall the software. I just had to sit and think for a bit.
Why was steam working just fine for days and then suddenly not working? I highly doubted I had a corrupted download since I always exited properly. I had a friend tell me I did not have to download all my games again I could just copy my entire steam folder from my desktop and run steam.exe and it works fine. So that is what I did today. When I did that it froze up on me again... sucked but at least eliminated the bad download possibility. Right after that happened I realized in the last couple of days there is only one thing I did with the creative software. I turned on the bass boost option... so just out of curiosity rather than uninstall it I just turned that back off again first. I did that and walla! steam works again. How strange is that bug? I have no clue but at least its a simple fix and I can still use the bass boost function when listening to music or something. |

I had the same problem with my G73. It wasn't just Steam that was making it freeze, a few other applications as well. I also noticed the problem started happening after I played with my audio settings in the Creative Mixer.
I can confirm that indeed after uninstalling all Creative software I am no longer experiencing the system freeze. The problem lies with Creative's faulty software. |

Happening to me, things where working, but now it just hanges before pulling up the loggin prompt.
Any other ideas or settings to check before an uninstall. Cause I actually use the creative software for alchemy so that I can use EAX in Warcraft and such. |
