Strange Glitch in game

hey all. this is my first post and while i can normally figure out problems on my own from googling and whatnot, i can't for the life of me figure out this problem. (also, the steam forum search function is down...)

i started playing portal on my computer yesterday. everything was running fine.

when i got to the first level with all the turrets, towards the end, the physics got all wacky. if i picked up a cube and dropped it, the cube would bounce along the ground.

i soldiered on, figuring it was something from the game that i hadn't remembered (silly, i know).

but now i'm at the level with the weighted companion cube and glados says the cube will drop, but when i look up, the cube is just stuck there, hanging in space. since the cube won't drop, i can't go on with the level.

here's my specs, if that helps:

AMD Turion X2 Ultra ZM-82 Dual-Core Mobile Processor
ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics RS780M
3 GB DDR2 RAM
64 bit vista

thanks in advance for any and all help. i'm showing the half-life pack to a friend and if he likes it, he might buy the pack. half-life 2, the expansion episodes, and team fortress 2 all work swimmingly.

Don't know if this will help; it's Support's Troubleshooting Video Errors article.

Maybe try verifying your game cache files (they mention that in the "IMPORTANT" box near the top)?

Have you tried reloading an earlier save? (I don't know what's going on here. Several people are having probs with HL2 & related games lately--works fine up to a certain point and then gets wacky...)

i saw on the gamefaqs page how to enter in cheat codes. i guess if nothing else i can use one of the cheats to progress.

I'd hope you try an earlier save first. But that's me, and I haven't been getting frustrated trying to figure why the game isn't working all of a sudden. (-ish.) (Which doesn't mean you're frustrated, just that I would be.)

You can start a new game at any chapter (test chamber) you've been to. So if you didn't save often enough, you can easily restart at almost any section.

If you're trying to get achievements, some won't be awarded if you have cheat mode enabled. (Maybe if you turn it off just in time you might be able to fool the game, but I haven't tested it.)

I started a new game from the most recent test chamber I was in. Worked like a charm. I lost some of my achievements, but I guess if I used those cheats, I would have lost them anyway.

Thanks again!

I don't think cheats affect achievements you've already gotten, just new ones. And *maybe* only while you have cheat codes enabled. (Was gonna check the first part, but I uninstalled & reinstalled my games last week...)

Cheats only effect achievements upon the moment you get them, with a few exceptions. For example, if you had cheats on, then turned them off, knocked down a camera, then turned them back on, it would register for the camera shy achievement. But if you use cheats at any time during the challenge maps, it will say "CHEATED" in big red letters over the door when you finish it, and you won't get any progress.

Kinda like Warcraft 2, which I think is fair (but is a map reveal *really* cheating?). The only time I cheated was at the sawmill in HL2. I wondered if I could have gotten that achievement if I tried it again and turned off the cheats before the last strider died, but decided it didn't matter...
