Steam hangs on starting pre-load Left 4 Dead 2 Demo

Recently, I formatted my PC with Windows XP Home Edition 32-bit and installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. Before doing this, I never had any problems with Steam and connections.

Ok here's my problem:

I just pre-ordered Left 4 Dead 2 including the early demo access. After the process of paying and going to the "my games" tab, I tried to pre-load the Left 4 Dead 2 Demo. I right click the Demo in my list and choose "view pre-load information". In the next screen Steam tells me that the Demo is ready to be preloaded. After I click the "Start Preloading Now" button, Steam hangs and Windows gives me the "Steam 732897 is not responding" error.

However, there appears to be quite much harddisk activity for some time while Steam hangs (no other programs started). Because I get the error, I am forced to close Steam. Now the weird thing happens:
After I have closed Steam, SOMETIMES my internet connection is gone, while my connection status reports no errors. So I restart my computer and now I see that my status DOES report an error.
Because of this, I am forced to disable/re-enable my LAN-Connection and sometimes even the whole modem.
I'm guessing it has to have something to do with the connection to the Steam "pre-load" server?

Downloading owned/released games does not give me any problems at all. I only encoutered it yet while trying to pre-load the Left 4 Dead 2 Demo.

In short:
What could cause Steam to stop responding after clicking the "start preloading now" button?

I would appreciate any help in this matter.
Thanks in advance,

EDIT: I know there are many problems with Steam recently, but I thought this one is kinda specific.

I just reinstalled Steam. It took me about 4 tries because at first it couldn't find some files needed for removal and after a succesfull reinstall, it paused updating several times.

Anyway, after the reinstall I installed the orignal Left 4 Dead of a retail disc with no problems. Updating afterwards is around 700 KB/s too. It's still updating as we speak, I will try to launch it afterwards.

Pre-loading Left 4 Dead 2 Demo is still a no go. I hope Valve fixes Steam's recent instabillity soon, or I won't be able to play my early demo access.

EDIT: Just ran Left 4 Dead no prob.

EDIT 2: Holy crap! Left 4 Dead 2 Demo magically started pre-loading this time! Speed is only around 500 Kb/s, but we're getting there!

I think reinstalling Steam really did the trick... *knocks wood*

When I try to preload the L4D2 Demo, steam hangs. The following error log was extracted from windows:

Yup, I got the same problem, same OS. I "fixed" it by unistallign Steam, restarting the computer and then reinstalling it. Can't wait to try the Demo when I get home!

I know you've already fixed it.
However, in my experience when steam appeared to hang, it turned out if I waited for a bit, it would eventually start responding again.
My suggestion to anyone with a hanging steam is to give it some time before trying to close it. eg: Wait for it to respond.

And you're right. I tried waiting a few minutes at the first place, only it didn't start responding again.
